Junior Systems Administrator

Rockford University invites applicants for the position of Junior Systems Administrator.  Reporting to the Director of Information Technology, the Junior Systems Administrator will join a customer oriented IT Department and use the tactics of education and training to enable our user community.  The preferred candidate will possess very strong troubleshooting skills, solid communication skills, and exceptional customer service skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Use a work order tracking system to ensure work orders are resolved or escalated. 
  • Oversee campus computer workstations, productivity applications, EDR software, utilities, and workstation connectivity.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement technology solutions that support business objectives.
  • Develop and maintain training materials related to help desk specialists.
  • Assist with hardware selection and recommendations as it relates to laptop, desktop, audiovisual and datacenter hardware.
  • Assist in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of hardware and software systems.
  • Perform routine system updates, patches, and upgrades.
  • Research and implement new systems and services to support and enhance the academic learning environment.
  • Participate in security audits and vulnerability assessments.
  • Ability to support Windows, Linux and Mac Operating Systems.
  • Provide backup and frontline support services to other senior-level staff.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively ticket information to support staff, faculty and executives of organization as well as to students.
  • Work on assignments that are moderately complex in nature where judgment is required in resolving problems and making routine recommendations.
  • Upgrade and maintain network systems and services
  • Train or direct users on the correct use of software and hardware within the organization
  • Be an escalation point for night and weekend event and system support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Familiarity with Active Directory and Microsoft 365.
  • Solid troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to install, upgrade and maintain production servers and systems.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and occasional weekends

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • 4 plus years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of the position required.
  • Preferred certifications: CompTIA A+, Network+ or Microsoft Certified Associate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

The physical and mental demands of this position are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions. While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and stand for extended periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Employees work in a professional office environment that is highly visible to members and the college community. Normal office conditions prevail. Office work is performed primarily indoors.  Ability to work in an office with a moderate noise level is required.
