Assistant Director of Student Involvement and Orientation

Rockford University invites candidates for the position of Assistant Director of Student Involvement and Orientation. The Assistant Director provides support in the leadership and coordination of a comprehensive campus activities program; this includes the planning, implementation, and assessment of social, service, and educational programs that address the needs and interests of students. This person assists with the leadership, planning, and coordination of the student activities programs on campus that will enrich and enhance the students’ overall experience. This person also serves as the Burpee Student Center building supervisor; the duties associated with this responsibility include training and supervising student workers/managers, managing the student center facility, and establishing and maintaining building policies and procedures. This position also provides support and leadership for the print and mail room and the spirit shop.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Student Programming 35%
- Lead and co-advise student leadership organizations in partnership with the Director, including Commuter Council.
- Coordinate and evaluate programming designed for commuter students.
- Assist in the planning and management of campus-wide student activities and traditions.
Student Center Manager Supervisor 40%
- Burpee Student Center
- Hire, train, schedule, and supervise approximately 30 Student Center Managers.
- Oversee building operations, furnishings, equipment, and policy enforcement.
- Conduct performance evaluations and monthly staff meetings.
- Print & Mailroom
- Provide daily oversight of print and mail services, including staffing, workflow, and service standards.
- Develop and implement procedures to improve efficiency and customer service.
- Manage inventory, equipment maintenance, and vendor relationships.
- Hire, train, schedule, and supervise approximately 10 Print & Mailroom Assistants.
- Spirit Shop
- Oversee daily operations, merchandising, inventory management, and sales strategies in coordination with the Director.
- Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising approximately 15 Spirit Shop Associates.
- Manage concessions operations, including restocking items, tracking inventory levels, and scheduling/conducting training for concession workers.
Student Services Leadership 25%
- Provide consistent office coverage and customer service.
- Collaborate with the Director on the design and execution of all orientation programs.
- Maintain accurate records, budgets, and assessment data for assigned areas.
- Support special projects and campus-wide initiatives as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High energy self-starter; must be able to take initiative with minimal guidance and be comfortable working both as an individual and as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with various stakeholders.
- Effective time management skills.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, auto insurance and insurable for driving per RU policy
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field preferred.
- Experience in student activities, event planning, or related campus operations.
- 1-3 years supervisory and budget management experience strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with print and mail operations preferred
- Experience using a variety of technology-based programs and systems.
