Associate Professor of Mathematics Filiz Dik is all too used to hearing one thing from many of those who initially walk through her classroom door. "First-year students will start out saying ‘I hate math,’” says Filiz, "but by the end of the semester, they are saying, ‘I like math. I can do it.’ That’s how I know I’ve done my job.”
Originally from Turkey, Filiz came to Rockford University shortly after finishing her Ph.D. While she enjoys the Rockford area and appreciates experiencing all four seasons, it is the students of Rockford University that really make RC feel like home. "Because classes are small, I get to know students so well outside of the classroom,” she says. That is important, since students majoring in mathematics will work with Filiz all four years, spending much of that time conducting original research.
Above all else, Filiz’s goal is to make mathematics attainable for all students, regardless of their major. "I want to make difficult concepts easy to understand,” she says. "Changing students’ opinions about math is really rewarding.” That is why Filiz is a Rockford University Rock Star Professor.
