Dr. Marilén Loyola specializes in contemporary theater in Spain with an emphasis on memory studies, migration, and trauma. She teaches courses in language, literature, and culture, as well as Latin American history, migration in the Hispanic world, and trauma in the graphic novel. Her students have put on plays such as Juan Mayorga’s Animales nocturnos and Gracia Morales’ NN 12 and, every two years, Dr. Loyola organizes a short-term theater/culture-themed study abroad trip to Spain. Dr. Loyola has also presented at several literature and theater conferences both in the United States and abroad. In July 2019, she will travel to Lisbon, Portugal, to present on Javier de Isusi’s Asӯlum (2015) at the MLA International Symposium, “Remembering Voices Lost.” Her most recent article, “Memory and the Ethical Imagination: The Holocaust and Deportation to Mauthausen in Twenty-first Century Spanish Theater,” will be published in Sara Brenneis and Gina Herrmann's forthcoming edited volume, Spain, the Second World War, and the Holocaust: History and Representation (2020, University of Toronto Press).
