SUMMARY:Forum Marquee Event: Constitution Day Celebration: “Who Controls Foreign Policy in the United States?”
DESCRIPTION:On September 17\, 1787\, the Constitution of the United States was signed in the Assembly Room of the Pennsylvania state legislature—the same site that witnessed the signing of the American Declaration of Independence. This year is the 238th anniversary of that historic occasion. \nRockford University will celebrate Constitution Day with a shared classroom visit from Marquette University Law School Professor Ryan Scoville who will be meeting electronically with Dr. Ron Lee’s Current Issues in American Foreign Policy class (POLS 387). Please sit in with us to listen to an informative aspect of the US Constitution that is often less-explored\, but increasingly critical in the 21st century. \nMost Americans are aware of the central role that the president and the executive branch play in foreign policymaking.  But has this always been the case? Find out what the Constitution tell us about the distribution of foreign policy powers and the foreign policy responsibilities of the other branches\, especially Congress. Explore how we get to the point where presidents and the executive branch seem to have almost exclusive authority over foreign policy. Learn the part the courts can and should play in interpreting the law and resolving disputes as they relate to foreign policy. Understand how the fact that the US. has a federal system of government that divides power between the national government and state governments effects American foreign policy. With respect to current foreign policy matters\, know the constitutional debates surrounding the Trump administration’s immigration and international trade policies and its use of military force. Come and learn more about our most basic governing document while celebrating its creation.

SUMMARY:Helping to Restore Civility in America Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Join the Institute of World Affairs and Trade for the Helping to Restore Civility in America Town Hall. The open-format dialog will feature special guests\, including former Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa)\, and former Rep. Reid Ribble (R-WI). \nThe town hall is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday\, November 3rd at Rockford University’s Fisher Chapel. The forum is free and open to the public and will help answer questions about Congress’ role in America\, if and how it reflects the country’s divisions\, and if Congress can help resolve those problems. The discussion also will include insight on whether citizens can do anything to mend America’s challenge while also reflecting on media’s role in these times. \nLoebsack is a former political science professor at Cornell College in Iowa. He was elected in 2007 after unseating a 30-year incumbent. He served on the committee on armed forces\, subcommittee on personnel and readiness\, and the committee on education. He is professor emeritus at Cornell College and continues to lecture and write. \nRibble was employed at his family’s roofing business when he won a three-way primary and unseated an incumbent in the 2010 election. He served on the transportation and infrastructure committee\, as well as the foreign affairs committee\, serving on the subcommittees on emerging threats and terrorism\, and non-proliferation. He is the president of the National Roofing Contractors Association. He teaches leadership to officers from all military branches at annual conferences at the Army War College. \nFormer Congressman Don Manzullo will moderate the event with Catherine Forslund\, the chair of the Historical and International Studies Department and Director of the Institute of World Affairs and Trade at Rockford University. \nThe program is being co-hosted by Rockford University\, the Institute of World Affairs and Trade at Rockford University (IWAT)\, Rockford Public Library\, and Rockford Chamber of Commerce\, and US Association of Former Members of Congress (Congress to Campus program). \n  \n\n\n\n

Members of the Strategic Planning Steering committee include Vice Presidents Cascione\, Custardo\, Hawsey\, Perry\, Worden; three faculty – Kelly James (Library)\, Amy Martin (Psychology)\, and Jennifer Rea (English); and four staff – Maria Diemer (Global Affairs)\, Cheryl Henert (Advancement)\, Jen Saylor (Athletics)\, and Ed Tomaszkiewicz (Facilities).  \nThe draft strategic plan is presented in four themes – Engage\, Build\, Grow\, and Experience. There are theme teams that have worked to develop initiatives to support each of these themes. Each of the theme teams will hold two open meetings for faculty and staff to present the work done so far and to receive feedback. All sessions will be held in Fischer Chapel. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend at least one session on each of the themes.
