Student Advocate, Level II

Rockford University invites candidates for the position of Student Advocate, Level II.  The incumbent of this position will assist the Assistant Director of Student Administrative Services/Financial Aid Specialist in all aspects of administering Federal, State and Institutional Aid.   He/she will support the integrity of the satisfactory Academic Progress requirement (appeals relating to SAP decisions) as well as compliance with all regulatory agencies.  This fulltime opportunity offers a rich benefits package, upon hire, including tuition remission for employee, spouse/partner and dependents. 

General Expectations:

  • Provide efficient, professional and accurate information in a manner which fosters/supports respect for all members of the Rockford College community.
  • Respond with “sense of urgency” to all customers questions and/or concerns.
  • Maintain/foster positive atmosphere to ensure all “transactions/contacts” are handled with the highest level of customer service.
  • Knowledgeable/proficient in all standard procedures of registration, student accounts and financial aid.
  • Knowledgeable about procedures of other departments and contact information to accurately direct customers as needed.
  • Promote/adhere to goals of increasing retention rates and communicate concerns to appropriate person(s) to ensure this goal.
  • Represent the Student Administrative Services department on various college committees.
  • Participate in functions that have a direct link to SAS (e.g. R.O.A.R. and Transfer Registration events). 

Principal Activities:

  • Counsel and advise students and parents of financial aid policies and procedures and assist them in making responsible (educationally related) financial decisions.
  • Attend various training sessions offered through ELM, ISAC, and ILASFAA.
  • Assist students in processing of any financial aid related forms.
  • Review application containing confidential information for accuracy and completeness and determine students’ financial aid eligibility including performing verification as required by ED, State of IL or RU policy.
  • Request additional information as needed and interpret for use in need analysis and verification.
  • Track the reception of ISIRs and make corrections (per institutional/ED.regulations)
  • Coordinate the Professional Judgment, Special Circumstances/Dependency Override processes and act as first-level of review (approval/denial).
  • Serve as the SAS point person for the Endowed/Restricted Scholarship awarding/tracking.
  • Website information upkeep with regards to Financial Aid and Consumer Information
  • Serve as back up for our front-end
  • New Student Packaging
  • Assist in the Transfer, Adult and continuing traditional student packaging.
  • Participate in the annual audit processes
  • Assist students and/or parents in completing FAFSAs as needed.
  • Assist in the development of new/modified policies, procedures, forms and instructions as necessary.
  • Student employment tracking
  • Assume additional duties as assigned by the Director of Student Administrative Services.
  • Serve as back up for Billing Specialist.
  • Serve as back up for VA SCO

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Skills and Experience:

  • Prefer a minimum of three years of experience in at least one of these areas: customer service, financial aid or retail sales.
  • Proven customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work effectively in a fast paced, multi-task oriented environment.
  • Proficient in MS word, MS excel and “data” programs
