Sarah Combs from Roscoe Illinois is the final Rock Solid Regent for the spring 2016 semester. Sarah is a senior early childhood education major and was nominated by Elisa Bott, Assistant Professor of Education. Professor Bott shared that, “Sarah is an excellent student, team player, and natural leader”. She recently coordinated the Week of the Young Child events on the RU campus and in the community at the Annual Early Childhood Family Fun Fair at Heartland Church. The community event she helped organize and attended had over 500 families participating in hands on science and math activities.
Additionally, Sarah organized and motivated a team of early childhood education students to showcase their skills and profession on campus through a quiz recently featured on the portal and a bulletin board display in the Colman Library. Sarah stays very busy with her course work and family responsibilities. She does not consider herself a traditional student due to her laser focus on her family, particularly raising her three year old child.
Sarah enjoys studying at RU because the location allows her to continue her education while raising a family with her husband. After graduation from RU she looks forward to obtaining a teaching position in preschool or the primary grades. Congratulations, Sarah!

Jennifer Caterina is the Rock Solid Regent for the week of April 17. She is a sophomore math and theater major from Huntingdon, Tennessee. She was nominated by Dr. Mehmet Dik and Dr. Filiz Dik. They shared that Jennifer has been an asset to the math department. Specifically, “she has been a tremendous help during the Northern Illinois Association of Mathematics Teachers annual math competitions for local high schools hosted at RU in January”. Additionally they comment that she is meticulous, professional and a joy to have in class.
Jennifer is very busy with a double major but she also makes time for extracurricular activities. She is a participant in the Regents Players and a member of the Math Club. She has also worked in the math lab and scene shop, as well as served as secretary for the Regents Players. Jennifer feels that RU is the right place for her because she can pursue her multiple passions at the same time. She also appreciates RU’s small size because it allows her to receive individualized attention and help from faculty and staff. After graduation she hopes to purse her passion for directing and theater. Congratulations, Jennifer!

Aaron Pearson, from Belvidere, Illinois is the Rock Solid Regent for the week of April 11. Aaron is a senior in the Bachelor of Science in Management Studies (BSMS) program and was nominated by Donna Harvey, Director for the BSMS Program. Donna shared that, “Aaron is always pleasant and helps other students in any way he can. He is active in his church and makes his family a priority even while pursuing his degree completion and working 50 hours a week”.
Aaron enjoys studying at RU because he needed a program that would allow him to attend classes at night. He is thankful that the BSMS program offers him the flexibility he needs as a working adult. He feels that his professors not only provide academic knowledge, but also real world knowledge that enhance the overall learning experience. Along with his academic endeavors and full-time work schedule, Aaron also finds time for additional activities. He’s served as volunteer for Meltfest, a coach for junior tackle football, and he is a member of the Beloit Rifle Club. Aaron also enjoys hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling and spending time with family and friends.
After graduation he plans to take a vacation in a warm location to celebrate his achievement. He also plans to seek a new job opportunity within the company where he is currently employed. He is also considering continuing his education at RU by entering the MBA program. Congratulations, Aaron!

The Rock Solid Regent for the week of April 4 is freshman Hanqing (Tracy) Wang. Tracy is a political science major from Jiangsu, China. She was nominated by Maria Diemer, Assistant Director of the Office of Global Affairs. Maria shared that Tracy is an “amazing leader, student, and worker”. She has been instrumental in her role as a student worker in the Office of Global Affairs (OGA). Her willingness to help faculty, staff and fellow students who visit the office is remarkable.
In addition to her work in the OGA, Tracy serves as a co-coordinator for the Campus Activity Board, as well as the treasurer for the Craft Club. She is also an active member of the Multi-Cultural Club. Tracy is thankful for the international program at RU. She feels the program does a great job of connecting the international students to the campus community. As a program participant, she enjoys the opportunity to get involved with a variety of activities and meet different people on campus.
Tracy has earned outstanding grades at RU however she shares that studying at RU is not only about her academic learning, but it is also about her becoming a better person. Currently, she plans to attend law school after graduating from RU. Congratulations, Tracy!

Morgan Bell, from Rockford, Illinois is the Rock Solid Regent for the week of March 21. Morgan is a junior criminal justice and psychology major. She was nominated by Stacy Simms, Assistant Director of SAS. Stacy shared that, “Morgan is a great representative of Rockford University. She works very diligently at her off campus job and internship. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to lend a helping hand to those in need”.
Morgan feels that RU has been a great place to pursue her academic goals. She appreciates the endless support and guidance she receives from her teammates, coaches, faculty, staff and classmates at RU. In addition to her academic progress, Morgan participates in several extracurricular activities. She is the captain of the Women’s Soccer Team, Vice President of Psych Society and Founders House. She also serves as a Student Alumni Ambassador and participant in SAAC. After graduation from RU Morgan has plans to attend graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology Counseling. While on her career journey Morgan would eventually like to obtain a doctorate degree in Forensic Psychology. Congratulations, Morgan!

Freshman Lewis Bochette is the Rock Solid Regent for the week of March 14. Lewis is a nursing major from Harvard, Illinois. He was nominated by Jim Schroeder, Head Football Coach. Coach Schroeder shared that Lewis is a focused, hard worker in the classroom and on the field. He is an example of the “academic athlete” that RU is eager to have participate in the sports program. During the fall semester, while balancing his practice and game schedule, Lewis earned a 3.5 GPA and he is working to do even better for the spring semester. Additionally, he also works as an event staff member for RU basketball games.
Lewis enjoys RU because of the small class sizes and the healthy environment with great students, coaches, professors and staff members. He feels that faculty and staff do their best to help students accomplish their goals not only in the classroom but also in life. After graduation from RU Lewis has plans to work as an emergency room nurse and possibly attend graduate school to further his education. Congratulations, Lewis!

Lauren Spitznas, from Rockford, Illinois is the Rock Solid Regent for the week of February 29. Lauren, is a junior nursing major and was nominated by Dr. Mehmet Dik. Dr. Dik shared, “Lauren has made a significant difference in my statistics class by her attentiveness, willingness, exemplary academic work, and good vibes spreading around.” Lauren earned the highest grade in Dr. Dik’s math course. He was impressed with how Lauren always came to class prepared for the session and ready to help her classmates. Dr. Dik further commented that she is the kind of caring person who brightens her environment regularly. She is an example of the saying, “a candle loses nothing by lighting the flame of another.”
In addition to her academic endeavors, Lauren is a single mom who has worked hard to balance her personal and educational responsibilities. She was recently selected by the Center for Learning Strategies (CLS) to co-facilitate the February Success Workshop titled, “Effective Time Management: Creating and Using a Study Schedule”. The workshop was well attended and Lauren shared many useful tips on how to create a daily schedule focused on your academic priorities.
In the midst of her busy schedule Lauren also finds time to volunteer as a first responder for fire and rescue at Blackhawk Farms which is affiliated with Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). She enjoys the wonderful teachers and staff at RU who are always available to help when students are in need. After graduation Lauren would like to relocate to the Chicagoland area and work in a neonatal intensive care unit. Congratulations, Lauren!

Samantha is a senior theater major with a concentration in design/tech from Flower Mound, Texas. She has a special interest in stage management and scenic design for theater. She was nominated by Mariah Harris, Residence Hall Director. Mariah shared that, “Sam is the perfect example of a senior who has accomplished it all and more here at RU and does whatever she can to give back to the RU community”.
Samantha is a member of RU Regent Players as well as Intervarsity. She has also served on the board of Regent Players. Additionally, over her four years at RU she has stage managed 7 main stage productions. She was also selected to participate in the Rockford University Leadership Institute. In her reflections on her student experience at RU Samantha shared, “I came from a big high school, in a big city, in an even bigger state, so it’s great to really feel like an individual”.
Samantha loves the atmosphere at RU. She appreciates all the one-on-one attention she receives from professors in her department and the overwhelming amount of opportunities she has received. She will soon be embarking on the adventure of a lifetime in August 2016 when she travels to Edinburgh, Scotland for the International Festival Fringe as the Performing Arts Department will be performing in an international arena. Additionally, she is working on career plans for after graduation. She recently attended a series of job interviews, related to her major, in Memphis, Tennessee. Samantha is excited about the adventures that await her after graduation. Congratulations, Samantha!

John Finley, from Rockford, Illinois is a junior political science major and was nominated by Rebecca Wallgren, Box Office Manager for Maddox Theatre. Rebecca shared, “John has impressed me with his leadership, character, sense of humor, and overall knowledge of the RU experience.” Rebecca is very pleased that she hired John to work in the Box Office. She is thankful for how well he handles a public role on campus. In addition to working a campus job, he serves as the co-coordinator of Campus Activities Board (CAB) as well as the treasurer and vice president of InterVarsity. He is also a member of the cross country and track and field teams.
John appreciates the small class sizes and the small community at RU. He enjoys being able to talk with his teachers if he has questions and wants to know more about a subject. John also likes that RU is small enough that he can know a lot of people, but big enough that he can still meet new people on campus. Attending law school after graduation from Rockford University is a current goal for John. Congratulations, John!

Sintheyah is a freshman criminal justice major from Rockford, Illinois. She was nominated by Dr. Mehmet Dik, Professor and Chair Department of Mathematics, Computer Science & Physics.
Sintheyah has a strong motivation to succeed in her academic work. Her focus on success is evidenced in her achieving a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester. Dr. Dik shared that Sintheya did a fantastic job in his course. She never missed a class and would always participate in classroom discussions. Both in and outside of class, Sintheyah would help classmates and try to cheer them up when they were not doing well. Dr. Dik states that Sintheyah’s presence made the classroom environment more enjoyable.
During her first semester at Rockford University Sintheyah has been able to successfully balance her academic endeavors with extracurricular activities. She is a participant in the Anthropology and Sociology Club and the Literati Club. Additionally, she is interested in participating in the study abroad program in the next year.
One of the reasons that Sintheyah enjoys studying at Rockford University is because she appreciates the small classroom sizes. She feels that there are multiple opportunities for her to improve herself as she studies for her major. After graduation from RU she would like to continue her education by attending graduate school.
