Residence Hall Director

SUMMARY:
The Residence Hall Director is one of two full-time, live-on Residence Life professionals at Rockford University.  S/he is a member of the Student Life team, works in coordination with other members of the Residence Life staff, and reports directly to the Assistant Dean of Students/ Director of Residence Life.  S/he is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the various programs and services that fall under the banner of Residence Life and that are respresentative of the mission of Rockford University.  This position requires seasoned judgment to provide direction and support in the form of advisement of the Resident Assistant staff and their programs, execution of crisis mangement and policy enforcement, and building maintenance.  The Residence Hall Director utilizes student development theory and strategies to provide an environment in the residence halls that enhances academic, personal and social development in the residents.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Community Development & Programming:

The Residence Hall Director(s) will promote and encourage a sense of community, individual responsibility, and respect for others through various programs and services. S/he will attend hall functions and will work to get to know all residential students on campus.  The Residence Hall Director(s) will strive to respond to student requests in a timely and informative manner;  provide counseling and referral services to individual students and serve as a role model for residential students.   

S/he will work with the Residence Life staff to communicated the rights and responsibilities of the individuals and the community and facilitate discussion when those rights come into conflict. S/he will work to foster a safe and secure living/learning environment, including informal consultation and referral services to Rockford University and community resources. 

The Residence Hall Director(s) will work with the Director of Residence Life to provide a vision utilizing student learning strategies and programming models for all students at Rockford University.  The goal of these programs will seek to encourage learning outside of the classroom and a sense of community in the Residence Halls while representing the mission of the University.

 

Student Life Team Member

The Residence Hall Director(s) will serve as a resource and representative of Rockford University to all students, parents, alumni, staff and faculty members. S/he will be responsible for participating in and supporting functions of the Student Life department as needed. 

 As a member of the Student Life team the Residence Hall Director(s) will provide constructive criticism to the Student Life department while providing solutions.  S/he will assist with the formulation and facilitation of policies and procedures as they relate to Student Life at Rockford University.  S/he will be expected to attend weekly staff meetings and assume other administrative duties as delegated from the Director of Residence Life as needed.

Judicial Administration

The Residence Hall Director will work to ensure that Residence Life and Rockford University policies are uniformly and fairly enforced.  S/he will work with the Director of Residence Life/Assistant Dean of Students to address alleged violations of the Code of Conduct as a hearing officer in a manner that is rooted in student development theory.  The Residence Hall Director(s)will prepare and communicate procedure for all paperwork and reports that detail the judicial system within the residence halls.  S/he will maintain judicial related files of current students and work with the Director of Residence Life to archive former students on a consistent basis. S/he may need to prepare witnesses and present cases to the Campus Judicial Board. 

On-Call Emergency Response/Duty Responsibilities

The Residence Hall Director(s) will provide on-call emergency coverage after hours for the resident population.  S/he will respond to a variety of student needs and coordinate response network within the department, as well as with other campus departments.  The Residence Hall Director(s) will prepare and maintain records of incidents, problems, and campus activities as they affect the residence halls and the resident population.  S/he will communicate these records to the Director of Residence Life regularly, and with other appropriate individuals and offices as needed.  S/he will work with the other Residence Hall Director and the Director of Residence Life to coordinate evening and weekend duty assignment, RA staff duty assignment, and staff training, in-services, and programs.

 Facilities Management

The Residence Hall Director(s) will work in conjunction with the Director of Operations and Director of Residence Life and to oversee the facilities management for the residence halls.  S/he will work closely with the Residence Life staff to ensure the proper identification of damages in both individual and common areas, hold hearings when necessary, and assign appropriate fines as needed.  S/he will work with the maintenance staff, Campus Safety & Security, and other campus departments to communicate the needs. 

The Residence Hall Director(s) will work to coordinate, with the Director of Residence Life, the opening and closing procedures for the housing facilities at the beginning and end of each semester, and during break periods in accordance with Rockford University housing policies.   

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Resident Assistants Supervision, Selection, and Training

The Residence Hall Director(s) will work with the Director of Residence Life to select, train, and supervise the resident assistants.  S/he will work to develop training modules and advisement  that will seek to assist the RAs in developing a hall environment conducive to living and learning, civic responsibility, and engagement. The Residence Hall Director(s) are expected to develop an administrative style that encourages creativity and provides motivation for the RA staff. 

S/he will meet regularly with RA staff individually and as a group to discuss their performance, personal leadership development goals, their residents, and issues affecting their specific hall and residence life community.  S/he will also be responsible for supervising RA programming, conflict mediation, and executing evaluations of the RA staff performance in coordination with the Director of Residence Life twice a year.  The Residence Hall Director(s) will work closely with the Director of Residence Life to develop a comprehensive training program in the fall and spring semesters for the RA staff. 

QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Individual who operates with a great deal of autonomy, receiving limited direction from the Director of Residence Life/Assistant Dean of Students.
  • Sincere interest in working in residence life.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage student staff to create a living-learning environment on campus.
  • Understanding of small University dynamics in relation to Residence Life.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.  Experience with conflict mediation.
  • Seasoned knowledge of student development theory and student learning, Rockford University policies and procedures, and practice excellent judgment.  

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  

  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • 2 years of residence hall experience as a leader
