Professional Tutor, Center for Learning Strategies

Rockford University is accepting applications for the position of Professional Tutor as part of the Center for Learning Strategies.  The professional tutor provides individual and small group tutoring and academic support for Rockford University students. Tutors provide coaching support for specific content areas in accordance with the mission, core values, and purposes of the university.  This part-time position offers scheduling flexibility.


 Provide academic assistance to assigned student(s), either in a group or individual setting.
 Assist students in achieving a better understanding of a specific subject area; assist with improving academic capabilities in designated areas; review of course material; and preparation for tests and examinations.
 Assist students with the development of study skills necessary for academic success.
 Provide evaluations and other reports as requested.
 Write and submit weekly notes after tutoring session(s).
 Document student progress.
 Maintenance of confidential files and records.
 Attend yearly training session and meetings required by the department administrator.
 Maintain consistent communication with supervisory staff.
 Model appropriate academic attitudes and behaviors to staff, faculty and students.
 Motivate and support students’ achievement and success.
 Research and select learning materials, textbooks, software, and equipment to facilitate tutoring; design specific handout, study and related materials.
 Develop a working relationship with Rockford University professors for assigned tutoring areas.
 Follow all Rockford University and CLS procedures and rules.
 Perform other duties as assigned.



 High energy self-starter; must be able to take initiative with minimal guidance and be comfortable working both as an individual and as part of a team.
 Strong verbal and written communication skills.
 Excellent interpersonal skills with various stakeholders.
 Effective time management skills.
 Knowledge of best practices related to teaching and learning, tutorial/learning materials and instructional aids.
 Knowledge of the theory of multiple intelligences to facilitate effective learning.
 Knowledge of integration of technology to facilitate teaching and learning to connect with students of all learning styles.
 Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities in working with faculty, staff and students with diverse backgrounds including academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, and disabilities.
 Must pass a criminal background verification.


 Bachelor’s degree minimum required. Master’s degree preferred, equivalent industry experience, certification, and demonstrated work experience may be substituted.
 Current teacher licensure preferred.
 Possess the appropriate experience, certifications and licensure for assigned content area(s).
 2 + years teaching experience.
