SUMMARY:Exit the King
DESCRIPTION:September 21-24\, 2023 (Thursday-Saturday\, 7:30 pm; Sunday 2 pm)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nDirector\, Prof. Deborah Mogford\nFirst produced in 1963 starring Alec Guinness and successfully revived to great acclaim on Broadway in 2009\, this absurdist exploration of ego and mortality is set in the crumbling throne-room of the palace in an unnamed country where King Berenger the First has only the duration of the play to live. Once\, it seemed he ruled over an immense empire and commanded great armies\, now his kingdom has shrunk to the confines of his garden wall. Refusing to accept his end\, he is attended by his present and former Queens who must help him face the final inevitable truth of life: death. By Eugene Ionesco\, Translated by Donald Watson.

SUMMARY:Urinetown: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:April 27-30\, 2023 (Thursday-Saturday\, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday 2 p.m.)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nGuest Director\, Stephen Schellhardt \nWinner of three Tony Awards\, three Outer Critics Circle Awards\, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards\, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system\, capitalism\, social irresponsibility\, populism\, bureaucracy\, corporate mismanagement\, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest\, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms. \nIn a Gotham-like city\, a terrible water shortage\, caused by a 20-year drought\, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities\, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people\, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! \nInspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill\, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be\, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective\, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

SUMMARY:The Beaux’ Stratagem
DESCRIPTION:The Beaux’ Stratagem (play)\nNovember\, 18 – 21\, 2021 (Thursday-Saturday\, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday 2 p.m.)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nDirector\, Prof. Deborah Mogford \nThornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of George Farquhar classic 18th century farce\, The Beaux’ Stratagem\, tells the tale of Aimwell and Archer\, two charming\, dissolute young men who have spent their fortunes carousing in London. Now shamed and debt-ridden\, they flee to provincial Lichfield. They decide the only way to recover their wealth is to marry for money. They take rooms at the local inn posing as master and servant. While in town they encounter the young\, beautiful\, wealthy\, and perceptive Dorinda and Mrs. Sullen. Will the Beaux\, Aimwell\, and Archer\, succeed in their stratagem? That remains to be seen because here in this seemly gentle countryside they encounter a teeming variety of human obstacles to their marriage plans: a crooked landlord\, a fearsome highwayman\, a fervent French Count\, a maid on the make\, a drunken husband\, a furious butler\, a natural healer of dubious abilities\, and a strange\, turbulent priest. Maybe\, if they can survive the misunderstandings\, mistaken identities\, and masterly sword play they may attain both wealth and love. \nFor a list of all our performances please visit the Performing Arts webpage. https://www.rockford.edu/artslectures/performingarts/\nFor tickets\, call the Rockford University Box Office at (815) 226-4100. SUMMARY:Canceled- "Rumors"
DESCRIPTION:A deputy mayor of New York and his wife have invited four couples to their Long Island home to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. When the first couple arrives\, they find the hostess gone and the host lying upstairs with a superficial bullet wound. He is slightly incoherent. The first couple try to hide what they fear could be a scandal from the second couple to arrive. They in turn try to hide it from the third couple\, and so on\, until all of the guests are caught in a mad confusion of rumors and misunderstandings. This is Neil Simon celebrating farce in a true madcap fashion. \nPurchase your tickets today! Single ticket admission for adults $12\, seniors age 55 and up\, and students is $9 unless otherwise noted.

SUMMARY:"The Good Doctor"
DESCRIPTION:Written by Neil Simon and Anton Chekhov and directed by Professor Deborah Mogford\, The Good Doctor is Neil Simon’s heartwarming and hilarious tribute to Anton Chekhov\, the early twentieth-century playwright and short story writer. Simon\, the popular Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright\, has cleverly woven a selection of Chekhov short stories into a performance of unending fun\, joy\, infectious humor\, and poignant sweetness. The title of the play refers to Chekhov’s profession in real life. It is the figure of Chekhov himself who introduces his wide array of characters. He brings to life an over-zealous young dentist\, a madwoman with a nervous disorder\, man who earns money by “drowning\,” a blustering general\, a “lady” of the night\, a sneezing playgoer\, the greatest seducer of women\, a well-meaning father seeking to introduce his son to the wonders of sex\, and many more. In this play\, Neil Simon seeks to celebrate the folly and tenderness of what it is to be human. \nTickets are required and seating is limited. To reserve tickets\, contact the Box Office at boxoffice@rockford.edu. The complete list of this seasons productions is available on the University’s website at www.rockford.edu/artslectures/performingarts/.
