SUMMARY:Describe the Night
DESCRIPTION:November 20-23\, 2025 (Thursday-Saturday\, 7:30 pm; Sunday 2 pm)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nDirector\, Prof. Deborah Mogford\nIn 2010 a Polish Air Force Flight plane crashed near the Russian City of Smolensky killing the president of Poland\, along with 18 members of the Polish Parliament. There is evidence suggesting this air disaster may have been an act of terrorism. Or is this just a conspiracy theory? The truth behind the incident sparked the mind of Rajiv Joseph to write an intense espionage thriller\, Describe the Night. Joseph explores the historical friendship between the writer Isaac Babel and Nikolai Yezhov\, the military man who helped create the KGB. How do their lives intertwine with a mysterious Stasi agent? This epic play traces the lives of seven people connected by history and myth over 90 years while asking the question how often does time\, hate\, and ruthlessness turn truth into lies and lies into truth. DESCRIBE THE NIGHT is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing\, LLC\, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection. (www.dramatists.com)

SUMMARY:The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee\nOctober 3-6\, 2024 (Thursday-Saturday 7:30 pm; Sunday 2 pm)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nDirector\, Prof. Marissa Barnathan \nIn this musical\, an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives\, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words\, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing\, pout-inducing\, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. \nTHE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE\nIs presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). SUMMARY:Exit the King
DESCRIPTION:September 21-24\, 2023 (Thursday-Saturday\, 7:30 pm; Sunday 2 pm)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nDirector\, Prof. Deborah Mogford\nFirst produced in 1963 starring Alec Guinness and successfully revived to great acclaim on Broadway in 2009\, this absurdist exploration of ego and mortality is set in the crumbling throne-room of the palace in an unnamed country where King Berenger the First has only the duration of the play to live. Once\, it seemed he ruled over an immense empire and commanded great armies\, now his kingdom has shrunk to the confines of his garden wall. Refusing to accept his end\, he is attended by his present and former Queens who must help him face the final inevitable truth of life: death. By Eugene Ionesco\, Translated by Donald Watson.

SUMMARY:Urinetown: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:April 27-30\, 2023 (Thursday-Saturday\, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday 2 p.m.)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nGuest Director\, Stephen Schellhardt \nWinner of three Tony Awards\, three Outer Critics Circle Awards\, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards\, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system\, capitalism\, social irresponsibility\, populism\, bureaucracy\, corporate mismanagement\, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest\, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms. \nIn a Gotham-like city\, a terrible water shortage\, caused by a 20-year drought\, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities\, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people\, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! \nInspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill\, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be\, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective\, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.
