SUMMARY:Forum Marquee Event: Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar: “Democracy and the Arts”
DESCRIPTION:What is the role of the arts in activating and sustaining democratic life? How have artists sustained the rights of free expression? Why are some forms of artistic expression censored? How have the arts contributed to social movements? Should the arts have a politically useful role? Or stay strategically “un-useful”? In different eras and regions of the world\, artists have responded to these questions quite differently. This lecture explores a range of socially engaged art practices\, considering how some seek to make community\, how some seek to expose inequity\, and how some open new ideas of what democracy might mean. \nShannon Jackson is the Cyrus and Michelle Hadidi Professor of the Arts & Humanities at UC Berkeley and the Chair of the History of Art department. Her research\, teaching\, and convening focus on the role of visual\, literary\, performance\, and media art forms in social movements and in public life\, with a recent focus on ecological aesthetics. For more information use this link to the PBK website; https://www.pbk.org/visitingscholars/2025-2026/shannon-jackson \n

SUMMARY:Forum Marquee Event: Constitution Day Celebration: “Who Controls Foreign Policy in the United States?”
DESCRIPTION:On September 17\, 1787\, the Constitution of the United States was signed in the Assembly Room of the Pennsylvania state legislature—the same site that witnessed the signing of the American Declaration of Independence. This year is the 238th anniversary of that historic occasion. \nRockford University will celebrate Constitution Day with a shared classroom visit from Marquette University Law School Professor Ryan Scoville who will be meeting electronically with Dr. Ron Lee’s Current Issues in American Foreign Policy class (POLS 387). Please sit in with us to listen to an informative aspect of the US Constitution that is often less-explored\, but increasingly critical in the 21st century. \nMost Americans are aware of the central role that the president and the executive branch play in foreign policymaking.  But has this always been the case? Find out what the Constitution tell us about the distribution of foreign policy powers and the foreign policy responsibilities of the other branches\, especially Congress. Explore how we get to the point where presidents and the executive branch seem to have almost exclusive authority over foreign policy. Learn the part the courts can and should play in interpreting the law and resolving disputes as they relate to foreign policy. Understand how the fact that the US. has a federal system of government that divides power between the national government and state governments effects American foreign policy. With respect to current foreign policy matters\, know the constitutional debates surrounding the Trump administration’s immigration and international trade policies and its use of military force. Come and learn more about our most basic governing document while celebrating its creation.

SUMMARY:Non-Forum Series: "A Reckoning of Political Misperceptions: The Psychological Origins of the Storming of the U.S. Capitol" by Dr. Ian Anson
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ian Anson will present “A Reckoning of Political Misperceptions: The Psychological Origins of the Storming of the U.S. Capitol” as part of our Non-Forum Series for the Spring 2021 semester. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, February 16\, 2021\, at 6 p.m. via Zoom. There is no formal registration.  \nTalk Description:\nOn January 6\, 2021\, a group of Americans stormed the U.S. Capitol\, attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election by force. This event rattled Congress\, captured headlines\, and left many Americans with a newfound sense of dismay. How did it all come to this? \nPolitical psychologists have devoted decades to understanding why and how Americans develop—and act upon—fringe political beliefs. In this presentation\, I review recent advances in the fields of misinformation\, polarization\, and motivated reasoning. In doing so\, I explain how ordinary Americans can develop dangerous misperceptions\, why such misperceptions are difficult to correct\, and what these trends portend for future political movements in the United States. \nBio:\nIan Anson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at UMBC in Baltimore\, Maryland. He joined the department in 2015\, after completing a Ph.D. in Political Science and an M.S. in Applied Statistics at Indiana University-Bloomington. Ian’s research primarily investigates partisan motivated reasoning\, a phenomenon that causes Republicans and Democrats to maintain diverging views of political and economic reality. His other work addresses diverse topics in public opinion\, political psychology\, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Recently\, Ian was honored to receive UMBC’s CAHSS Early-Career Faculty Excellence Award.

SUMMARY:Last Lecture: "Creativity\, Crisis\, and Why Our Imaginations Matter" by Dr. Marilen Loyola
DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 1 at 4 p.m. to hear Dr. Marilen Loyola present her “Last Lecture” via Zoom. \nThe Last Lecture is part of the Spring Forum series at the University and provides an opportunity for students to nominate a member of the faculty to deliver his or her ‘last lecture’ as the University nears the end of its academic year. Although this year\, it’s the non-forum series\, Dr. Loyola will present on “Creativity\, Crisis\, and Why Our Imaginations Matter.” \nThe Last Lecture series at Rockford University was inspired by Randy Pausch. Dr. Pausch was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University from 1997 to his death in 2008. Before his death\, he was asked to give the students his Last Lecture. Dr. Pausch delivered a laugh-filled session of teaching stories\, about going after your childhood dreams\, and helping others achieve theirs. The Last Lecture Series has been made possible through the generosity of the Father Robert J. Verstynen Trust; honoring Rockford University faculty members for their years of teaching and example of lifelong learning. \nRegistration is not required for this event\, just use this Zoom link on Monday\, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Canceled- FORUM: The Future of Climate Change: Harold Hongju Koh\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:On November 4\, 2019\, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord in one year’s time. Where does that leave America and Americans in the ongoing effort to combat the harms of climate change? If\, as French President Macron said\, “there is no Planet B\,” do we have a legal\, political\, and policy strategy to save this one? If so\, what are its elements? \nDr. Koh’s visit is in partnership with Phi Beta Kappa.

SUMMARY:Canceled - FORUM: Football Physics: Tim Gay\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled. \nDr. Gay’s visit is in partnership with Sigma Xi and the American Chemical Society. \nThis talk discusses a series of one-minute physics lectures given to the fans that attend the University of Nebraska home football games. Lecture topics have included Newton’s Laws of Motion (blocking and tackling)\, projectile motion (kicking and punting)\, kinematics (open-field running)\, and the ideal gas law (why not fill the football with helium to get better hangtime?). Laboratory demonstrations have featured Professor Gay being tackled by a 370 pound lineman\, pummeled with a sledgehammer as he lies on a bed of nails\, and learning the finer points of passing from Heisman trophy winner Eric Crouch. The problem of simultaneous edification and amusement of the fan in the stands is considered.
