Graduate Assistant for Career Development and First Year Programs

Rockford University is now accepting applications for the position of Graduate Assistant in Career Development and First Year Programs to begin August 1, 2019.  The GA will support Career Development and First Year Programs through planning and executing workshops and events, counseling students and alumni, supporting the Director with first year programs (Freshman Orientation, Freshman Retreat, and First Year Seminars), and effectively performing other duties as listed in the description. He/she co-supervises student workers, including the Regent Experience Guides. When the Director is out of the office, the Graduate Assistant will act in his/her place.   Benefits include tuition remission and a monthly stipend.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
 Counsel students regarding resumes, cover letters, interviewing, deciding a career path, finding an internship, graduate school, the job search, etc.
 Work with undecided students through one-on-one appointments to help them learn how their values, skills, interest and personality relate to choosing a career path.
 Help plan and organize the Fall and Spring Career and Internship Fairs that are partnered with Rock Valley College and the Rockford Register Star.
 Help plan and organize other events and workshops. Update internal career portal and external website with career related information and events and services offered by the department
 Present career-related material in workshops and classes.
 Inform current students and potential students of services offered by Career Development at ROAR Days, SOAR Days and Visit Days.
 Help manage the Federal Work Study Off-Campus Program, including the annual budget.
 Administer and gather data from graduate surveys.
 Other duties as assigned.

FIRST YEAR PROGRAMS ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
 Work with the Director to hire, train, and enact continued professional development for the Regent Experience Guides.
 Help to design training for the Regent Experience Guides, particularly in areas of professionalism, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
 Assist with the management of Regent Experience Guides, including team meetings, one-on-one mentorship meetings, and retraining.
 Support and co-lead with the Director during First Year Seminar Programming; specifically, Freshman Orientation, Freshman Retreat, and First Year Seminar.
 Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be computer proficient and comfortable with general office equipment (phone, printer).
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information.
• Ability to work 25+ hours per week.
• Ability to effectively present information to students, parents, employers, faculty, and staff.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to develop rapport with students and alumni to effectively counsel them.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree required. A degree in psychology, education or a related field is desired.
