Director of Student Success and Retention

The Director of Student Success and Retention is an integral member of the Enrollment Management Leadership Team and reports to the Vice President for Enrollment Management. The primary emphasis of this position is to create and implement programs that will aid in student retention and persistence at Rockford University. This includes working with Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, and Student Life staff to identify ways to support students and retain them through graduation.

Summary

The Director of Student Success and Retention is an integral member of the Enrollment Management Leadership Team and reports to the Vice President for Enrollment Management.  The primary emphasis of this position is to create and implement programs that will aid in student retention and persistence at Rockford University.  This includes working with Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, and Student Life staff to identify ways to support students and retain them through graduation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Provide vision and leadership in the development of policies, programs, and procedures related to the retention of students at Rockford University.
  • Develop an understanding of current issues that prevent students from having a successful university experience.
  • Collect and interpret data as it relates to retention.
  • Administer the College Student Inventory (CSI) and Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI).
  • Work with academic advisors and SAS to resolve student concerns regarding academic and financial aid issues.
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, and administration to broaden their understanding of student retention efforts and assist them in understanding the significant role they play in student retention and persistence.
  • Work with first year advisors to provide all first year students quality advisement.
  • Work closely with SAS and admissions for reporting retention data.
  • Track students and institutional concerns as well as measures taken to resolve concerns.
  • Chair the Student Intervention Team and determine best measures to assist individuals using a holistic approach.
  • Serve as a contributing member on university committees as assigned.
  • Assume other duties as delegated by the Vice President for Enrollment Management.

Work with Students

  • Provide advocacy services to students who self-refer or who are referred by Rockford University faculty or staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between faculty and students.
  • Work with students who are conditionally admitted or who are placed on academic probation in developing a plan for success and to meet with them on a regular basis to monitor their progress. 
  • Assist students in adding/dropping/registering for classes when their academic advisor is not available.
  • Assist students who appeal academic dismissals or who petition to return to Rockford University for academic study.
  • Make appropriate referrals for students needing assistance from other campus offices (e.g., Lang Health, Wellness and Counseling, Disability Services, Center for Learning Strategies).

Professional development

  • Attend conferences and workshops related to student success and retention.
  • Keep current regarding student success and retention issues.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a related field.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi task.
  • High energy self-starter; must be able to take initiative with minimal guidance and be comfortable in working both as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with various stakeholders.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Strong PC skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access etc.
