DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the current exhibition 5 minute Drift\, at Rockford University Art Gallery\, Melissa Leandro will be giving a talk.\nWhen: Wednesday April 3\, at 5:15\nWhere: Clark Art Center\, Rm 111\nAfter the talk\, a mini reception with a donation bar will be held in the gallery so guests can have another chance to see the work. \nMelissa Leandro 5 minute Drift presents the work of Chicago-based artist Melissa Leandro as she reflects on personal familial and cultural realities that coalesce experiences from her everyday life and family histories. Leandro’s exhibition introduces a hodgepodge of domestic vignettes through the use of woven\, quilted and embroidered textiles\, uniquely upholstered furniture\, collaged plastic tablecloths and plaster sculptures created by Leandro and her father. \nHer practice is shaped by past experiences and relationships; specifically family memories of her mother working as a housekeeper in Miami\, Florida; her grandfather’s farm house in Costa Rica; and her father’s living as a construction worker and builder. Through the process of cyanotype printing and drawing techniques\, Leandro documents her present day collecting of souvenirs\, knick-knacks\, and natural detritus during her travels aqua melt\, Melissa Leandro\, Jacquard woven cloth\, dye\, foil\, 2018 within and outside of the U.S. She considered the ephemeral nature of personal objects\, both treasured and disposable\, and seeks to recognize how they shape her sense of identity.

DESCRIPTION:Come join the International students at Rockford University as they prepare a wide variety of international dishes for the University’s annual International Food Festival. \nThis event will take place on Saturday\, April 6 from 5 to 8 p.m.\, doors open at 4:30 p.m.\, in Regents Hall\, 2nd floor\, Burpee Center. \nSponsored by Rockford University’s Multicultural Club and the Office of Global Affairs\, the International Food Festival features authentic recipes from over 33 countries like Denmark\, Germany\, Philippines\, Japan\, China\, Sweden\, Turkey\, Syria\, Italy\, Saudi Arabia\, Mexico and France. Members from the Multicultural Club will prepare foods so that visitors can taste home cooked meals from their countries. International entertainment is also planned so that guests can enjoy traditional song and dance while they eat. Rockford University is currently home to more than 112 international students representing 23 countries.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in this free webinar as Dr. Jean Swindle demonstrates how primary sources can be used to engage students in critical Contemporary Courageous Conversations.  Addressing issues of social justice in the classroom can be\, in many teaching contexts\, controversial. To examine and critique the status quo\, students are asked to challenge their preconceived notions of what is “normal” or “just the way things are” and often\, cultural distance\, complicity\, ignorance\, white guilt\, and more make these conversations challenging in K-12 settings. However\, primary sources provide tools through which educators can frame these conversations rooted in the past and use them as bridges to address current critical social justice issues. \nUsing the Courageous Conversations protocol\, educators can address racial disparities through safe\, authentic\, and effective cross-racial dialogue. DESCRIPTION:Bern Sundstedt `77\, Senior Project Specialist\, will perform and discuss the “The Evils of Tobacco\,” a serio-comedy-monologue written by Anton Chekhov in 1886 as translated by Michael Frayn. The play is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH\, INC. Mr. Sundstedt appears through the courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association\, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers. Following the presentation there will be a celebratory reception in the lobby of Clark Arts in honor of the entire Brown Bag Series and its presenters. Clark Arts is accessible.  \nThe performance and short discussion following is part of the University’s Brown Bag Series\, a semester-long slate of presentations offered by faculty and staff of the University that feature topics of special interest to the presenters in order to spark the curiosity of others and drive conversation. \nAll Faculty\, staff\, students\, and members of the RU campus and Rockford community are welcome to attend.
