SUMMARY:Recent Work by Robert Mattson & Marjorie Nilssen
DESCRIPTION:On Display: September 9th – October 7th\nReception: Friday\, September 9th 6 to 8 p.m.\nRobert Mattson and Marjorie Nilssen are from New London\, Minnesota\, and are sharing their work in acrylic and wax for this exhibit. Robert Mattson earned an MA in Art from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud\, MN. He was an Art Professor at Ridgewater College in Willmar\, Minnesota from 1967-2001. Mattson’s paintings are expressions of formal oneness created through a process of give and take. They are spontaneous and intuitive and are the culmination of 65 years of being a painter. \nMarjorie Nilssen earned an MA in Art from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud\, MN. She was an Art Professor at Ridgewater College in Willmar\, Minnesota from 1988-2021. For the past 10 years she has been fascinated with the encaustic process because of its sensual and forgiving qualities. Most of the works in the exhibit were created by melting wax\, burning paper and adding color to create unique forms. Sometimes\, melted wax and oil paint is mixed and carefully applied to wood panels. Marjorie works intuitively and spontaneously to discover the most unique one-of-a kind pieces which are purely aesthetic and are not connected with any specific meanings or symbols.

Replicated and reinvented moments of cinematic horror\, science fiction\, comedy and drama intermingle with memory to form bizarre personal narratives. Over the years\, each uncanny conglomeration of familiar objects and themes has both thrilled and confounded audiences. The delight in the experience of Mike Rea’s vision is the balance between a feeling of understanding that is quickly replaced by new\, surprising discoveries. Whether as conventional sculptures standing alone\, or as props in interactive installations and performances\, these often-massive objects reflect a culture of humor\, violence\, vulgarity\, and sensitivity.

The play chronicles the strength and determination of the women from the 1922 to 1938 as their lives are changed by the right to vote and the possibilities of jobs for women. This is an awe-inspiring story of survival and the fight to improve the working conditions for all in light of new scientific developments.
