DESCRIPTION:Did you know domestic violence is the 3rd leading cause of homelessness among families? We aim to help put an end to domestic violence as supporter of the “Put a Nail in It\,” an initiative sponsored by Safe Horizons and the No More campaign. This is the second year RU has participated in solidarity with survivors of domestic violence. \nHow can you support?: Meet us at the Den\, have your ring finger painted purple (the nationally recognized color for domestic violence awareness) and spread the word! Simple as that and takes less than 10 minutes. The Put a Nail in It awareness program will be held Oct 24 & Oct 25. We extended the time for Oct 24 until 2:30. \nMeet and get your nail painted by student athletes\, members of the Title IX Team and the new Lang Health Counseling staff. With 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experiencing the impact of domestic violence in their lifetime\, we encourage you to stand in solidarity by reading the proclamation to stand up for\, stand with\, and speak out against this societal issue. \nWednesday\, Oct. 25\, after the campus starts “putting a nail in domestic violence” at 11:30 a.m.\, we will pause for a moment to read the proclamation and pledge at 12:15 p.m. At 12:30 p.m.\, we will witness the launch of “Beautiful\,” a video created by RU Student Michael Jender in recognition of domestic violence awareness and bullying awareness month. He will share the inspiration behind creating the video. The video will be available on the Title IX page after the launch. DESCRIPTION:Co-founder and executive director of the Dreamcatcher Foundation\, Brenda Myers-Powell was a product of human trafficking at the age of 14\, when she escaped an abusive home life and learned to navigate the streets of Chicago. She endured continued abuse and addiction for 25 years as a prostitute and survived to mentor young women out of the same path. Now\, Myers-Powell educates on the perils of human trafficking with a raw edge not for the faint of heart. \nPart of Rockford University’s Forum Series\, this free lecture will be offered in Clark Arts Center’s Maddox Theatre on our Rockford campus\, 5050 E. State St.

DESCRIPTION:The artist Erin Furimsky will be giving a public lecture about her work in Art History Room 111 in the Clark Arts Center at 5 p.m. Immediately following\, there will be a public reception for her solo exhibition\, “Beneath Repetition” at the Rockford University Art Gallery in the Clark Arts Center from 6-8 p.m. \nErin Furimsky’s meticulous details reflect elements of domesticity\, floral motifs\, and calligraphy. The fullness of the ceramic sculptures give the illusion of buoyancy\, complementing the vivid surface treatment. Fragments and layers accumulate organically across the bulbous surfaces of Furimsky’s sculptures\, leaving a sense of order remaining as the embellishments are coupled with linear patterns and blocks of solid color.

DESCRIPTION:“The Monster Within\,” a documentary film produced by students of the Harlem High School Veteran Project\, will be shown at 10 a.m. on Saturday\, Nov. 4 in Maddox Theater. The film focuses on the post-war struggles that veterans Alex Feggestad and James Thew faced when returning home. A Q&A with the filmmakers and the featured veterans will follow the film screening. In addition\, two teacher panelists will address use of oral histories in the classroom. \nThis event is free and open to the general public\, made possible by funding from the Library of Congress.
