SUMMARY:Examining Modern Genocide Using Primary Source Documents
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will delve into the complexities of modern genocide utilizing primary source documents to drive instruction. Attendees will examine the complex role of what defines genocide and how the atrocities that comprise the term evolve. Focus points will include summation and overview of modern world genocides\, analysis of American and global response to genocide\, and discussion of the role of the survivor in the modern world.Learners will be tasked with taking the lessons from this workshop back to their classrooms and lives to continue to intellectually engage others in this topic in hopes of one day ending atrocities worldwide. \nSecondary and post-secondary educators and students are invited to register for this four-hour workshop. Two sessions\, March 29 and April\n 19\, 6-8pm. CPDU/PDH hours available for attending the entire four-hour workshop. No partial credits. DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Memorial Day with Survivor Eva Kor\n Tuesday\, April 10\, 7 p.m. \nRegents Hall – Burpee Center\n Rockford University’s Forum Series is partnering with the Jewish Federation of Rockford for a 2018 Yom Hashoah Memorial Observance program. Our featured speaker is Eva Mozes Kor\, a survivor of the Holocaust\, a forgiveness advocate\, and a revered public speaker. With the driving message of “never give up” in mind\, she has emerged through a life filled with trauma as a brilliant example of the power of the human spirit to overcome. Kor is the recipient of the 2017 Sachem award\, the highest honor in the state of Indiana. The program also will include brief remarks from leaders of Rockford’s Jewish community\, a time for prayer\, and a candle lighting ceremony. All are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Book adapted from Voltaire by Hugh Wheeler\nMusic by Leonard Bernstein\nLyrics by Richard Wilbur with additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and John La Touche\nDirected by Professor Jeff Hendry \nPurchase Tickets Now\nIn honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the renowned American Composer Leonard Bernstein\, the Performing Arts Department and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra will partner to present the musical Candide. The satirical novella was written by Voltaire\, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment\, and tells a comic tale of a young man’s journey from idealism to wisdom. Come join us for “the best of all possible worlds.” This special production featuring an RSO pit orchestra is part of the “Leonard Bernstein at 100” festival. Mr. Bernstein had a special connection to Rockford University\, speaking at its commencement ceremony in 1966. His beloved piano teacher and long-time secretary\, Helen Coates\, was a native of Rockford and 1916 graduate from then Rockford College. \nThe festival is made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois and Illinois Arts Council Agency.

DESCRIPTION:International students at Rockford University will prepare a wide variety of international dishes for the University’s 10th annual International Food Festival\, Saturday\, April 21 from 5 to 8 p.m.\, doors will open at 4:30 p.m.\, in Regents Hall\, 2nd floor\, Burpee Center on the Rockford University Campus located at 5050 East State Street\, Rockford. \nSponsored by Rockford University’s Multicultural Club and the Office of Global Affairs\, the International Food Festival will feature authentic recipes from countries like Germany\, Philippines\, Japan\, China\, Sweden\, Turkey\, Syria\, Italy\, Saudi Arabia\, Liberia\, Mexico and Bosnia. Members from the Multicultural Club will prepare foods so that visitors can taste home cooked meals from their countries. International entertainment is also planned so that guests can enjoy traditional song and dance while they eat. Rockford University is currently home to more than 114 international students representing 26 countries
