DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone! My name is Taylor Larson and I’m the Graduate Assistant for Lang Health Center. As part of my Graduate Assistantship with the Health Center I am helping get our Rock Solid Healthy Lifestyle Program up and running for the year. This is the program that helped put on smoothie Wednesdays last year and other events. I just wanted to give you all an idea of how this program is going to look this year and how you can get involved. \nEach week we’re going to have a theme for awareness based on the National Health Organization’s Observations. For example\, our first week\, starting September 9\, will be Suicide Awareness and Prevention Week. During these weeks we will host events that coincide with the cause and we will also help spread awareness about related events that are going on in the community. \nWe are looking for students who are interested in sponsoring or hosting an event\, helping plan and orchestrate events\, or even just to hand out flyers or put up posters. THERE IS NO LONG-TERM COMMITMENT. This is not a club. You get to pick when\, how often\, and what you want to volunteer for. We are just looking for students who are passionate about a cause and looking for a way to spread awareness. The Health Center will be your resource for planning events\, purchasing supplies\, and more. \nAlso\, every Friday will be a “Color Out For the Cause” day. This means\, for example\, that if it’s breast cancer awareness week\, you wear pink. If you wear pink and check in at the Rock Solid Table in the Den\, you will get a punch on your Rock Solid punch card and you will get a small prize. Once you get so many punches\, you get entered into a drawing for a Fitbit. We are looking for students to help spread awareness about the Cause and the Color of the week and volunteer at the table. \nI understand that many of you are already very busy and involved\, but I also understand that many of you have things that you are passionate about. Come to the meeting\, tell us your ideas\, and we will plan events according to what you want!

DESCRIPTION:Rockford University commemorates the 1787 anniversary of the adjournment of the Constitutional Convention with a visit from 1987 RU alumnus Judge Iain D. Johnston\, who serves the Northern District of Illinois’ Rockford-based Western Division. Judge Johnston was captain of the Regents soccer team and furthered his education at University at Buffalo and The John Marshall Law School in Chicago after leaving RU\, returning to Rockford to work as a judicial clerk for Judge Philip G. Reinhard. Having founded his own law firm after working in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and at a private practice\, Judge Johnston was appointed to his current role in 2013.

He incorporates this data into digital and sculptural work that intersects the realms of science and art. Using this and other self-recorded data\, Cartwright creates bold\, minimal landscape sculptures and digital media projects that explore topography\, temperature\, light\, and movement.

DESCRIPTION:Visit the gallery from 3-6pm to see Stephen Cartwright’s solo exhibition\, “Surface Elements” at the Rockford University Art Gallery in the Clark Arts Center. \nFor 18 years\, Stephen Cartwright has recorded his exact latitude\, longitude and elevation for every hour of every day. He incorporates this data into digital and sculptural work that intersects the realms of science and art. Using this and other self-recorded data\, Cartwright creates bold\, minimal landscape sculptures and digital media projects that explore topography\, temperature\, light\, and movement.

DESCRIPTION:This week is Health and Fitness week for Rock Solid Healthy Lifestyle! Come to the quad between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday\, Sept. 28 to Get Lit for Fitness! There will be a series of stations and activities available to illustrate different ways that students can get fit. Each student has the opportunity to complete the stations\, and you can even choose to compete against others. Those with the best times and records for each station will receive prizes. We will also have music and yard games available if students want to just come hang out! Students can come and go all day. It’s a great way to learn about fitness and have some fun while we’re at it.

SUMMARY:Honor Killings in the Modern World: Laila Anwarzai Ayoubi
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Laila Anwarzai Ayoubi\, associate professor at Martin University and adjunct professor at Butler University in Indianapolis\, discusses her new book\, Niki’s Honor\, a powerful story about honor killing practices still occurring in many parts of the world against girls and women. The author\, a former journalist and diplomat from Afghanistan\, is a past recipient of the International Women Award. Her 2015 novel\, inspired by a student’s interest in the topic\, is based on the true story of a young Pashtun girl trapped by cultural traditions in her Soviet-controlled country. Dr. Ayoubi holds a Ph.D. in philosophy in international relations from Preston University\, a master’s in near Easter languages and culture from Indiana University\, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in English from Martin University\, and a bachelor’s in French and journalism from Kabul University.
