SUMMARY:Last Lecture of Dr. Edward Mathieu
DESCRIPTION:From 1972 until 1986\, Father Verstynen was involved in Campus Ministry at Rockford College and Rock Valley College serving also as an Adjunct Professor at both schools. Funds to support The Last Lecture program were given by a generous donor in Fr. Verstynen’s memory to promote the value of sharing lifelong experiences with students and the local community. \nSince his arrival in 2017\, Dr. Mathieu has been a vital pillar in the Historical and International Studies Department. Before he retires\, share the wisdom of his experiences as he explores his encounters with the discipline of history throughout his career. He will discuss his sense of the evolving nature of the discipline and how that has related to his sense of self and his teaching over the years in Fisher Chapel.

SUMMARY:Non-Forum Series: "A Reckoning of Political Misperceptions: The Psychological Origins of the Storming of the U.S. Capitol" by Dr. Ian Anson
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ian Anson will present “A Reckoning of Political Misperceptions: The Psychological Origins of the Storming of the U.S. Capitol” as part of our Non-Forum Series for the Spring 2021 semester. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, February 16\, 2021\, at 6 p.m. via Zoom. There is no formal registration.  \nTalk Description:\nOn January 6\, 2021\, a group of Americans stormed the U.S. Capitol\, attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election by force. This event rattled Congress\, captured headlines\, and left many Americans with a newfound sense of dismay. How did it all come to this? \nPolitical psychologists have devoted decades to understanding why and how Americans develop—and act upon—fringe political beliefs. In this presentation\, I review recent advances in the fields of misinformation\, polarization\, and motivated reasoning. In doing so\, I explain how ordinary Americans can develop dangerous misperceptions\, why such misperceptions are difficult to correct\, and what these trends portend for future political movements in the United States. \nBio:\nIan Anson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at UMBC in Baltimore\, Maryland. He joined the department in 2015\, after completing a Ph.D. in Political Science and an M.S. in Applied Statistics at Indiana University-Bloomington. Ian’s research primarily investigates partisan motivated reasoning\, a phenomenon that causes Republicans and Democrats to maintain diverging views of political and economic reality. His other work addresses diverse topics in public opinion\, political psychology\, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Recently\, Ian was honored to receive UMBC’s CAHSS Early-Career Faculty Excellence Award.

When the first couple arrives\, they find the hostess gone and the host lying upstairs with a superficial bullet wound. He is slightly incoherent. The first couple try to hide what they fear could be a scandal from the second couple to arrive. They in turn try to hide it from the third couple\, and so on\, until all of the guests are caught in a mad confusion of rumors and misunderstandings. This is Neil Simon celebrating farce in a true madcap fashion. \nPurchase your tickets today! SUMMARY:FORUM: The Human Library
DESCRIPTION:Join the volunteers from the Northern Illinois Chapter of The Human Library on Nov. 12 at 7 PM and gain access to “The Human Library”.  \nThe Human Library is\, in the true sense of the word\, a library of people. Since 2000\, Human Library events have featured human beings serving as open books\, allowing interactive conversations that the audience would not normally have access to. Every human book from our bookshelf represents a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice\, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle\, diagnosis\, belief\, disability\, social status\, or ethnic origin. This interactive event will last at least 90 minutes; please plan accordingly.  \nPresented by volunteers from the Northern Illinois Chapter of The Human Library and in collaboration with the Office of Global Affairs and the Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement.

SUMMARY:FORUM: The Anomic Bomb: Mass Murder in a Mad World
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Casey Jordan on Nov. 4 at 7 PM in Maddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center as she discusses “The Anomic Bomb: Mass Murder in a Mad World”.  \nMore than a century ago the great sociologist Emile Durkheim coined the phrase “ANOMIE” in an attempt to describe the complex world of chaos experienced by people who committed suicide. Criminologist and forensic psychologist Casey Jordan will provide insight into anomic mass murder\, differentiating between terrorism\, workplace violence\, and family annihilations\, and end with a brainstorming session for what we can do –if anything—to identify the Anomic Bomb.
