DESCRIPTION:The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee\nOctober 3-6\, 2024 (Thursday-Saturday 7:30 pm; Sunday 2 pm)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nDirector\, Prof. Marissa Barnathan \nIn this musical\, an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives\, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words\, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing\, pout-inducing\, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. \nTHE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE\nIs presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). DESCRIPTION:Dr. K. Renee Horton\, NASA Airworthiness Deputy for the Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstrator (EPFD) Project will speak at Rockford University\, cohosted by FORUM and the Illinois Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Dr. Horton is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics (STEM)\, works diligently in the community for STEM education and outreach. \nFounder of Unapologetically Being\, Inc.\, a nonprofit for advocacy and mentoring in STEM\, Renee speaks worldwide and continues to make an impact for both personal and systemic change to change the face of STEM. Dr. Horton will discuss the intersection of science research\, life’s struggles\, and a career in STEM\, focusing on the theme of overcoming a disability. Through personal anecdotes and scientific accomplishments\, we will delve into the challenges faced highlighting the power of determination and perseverance in overcoming obstacles. \nJoin us as we discuss how resilience\, innovation\, and a passion for discovery can lead to success and inspire positive change in the world.
