DESCRIPTION:Dr. Roger M. Villamar\, assistant professor of anthropology and sociology at Rockford University\, will present “Jivaroan Groups\, Anthropologists\, and Stereotypes: Contemporary Images of the Peruvian Awajún and Wampís” at the Burpee Museum of Natural History on Sunday\, March 12. As an applied anthropologist with a Ph.D. from the University of South Florida\, Dr. Villamar will describe his years of research and involvement with the Awajún and Wampís of the western Peruvian Amazon\, the role anthropologists have played in Amazonian studies\, media portrayals and stereotypes of indigenous peoples\, and his most recent research and current projects with Awajún and Wampís activists and professionals. Admission is $5\, or free for museum members.

DESCRIPTION:Che “Rhymefest” Smith discusses how citizens can use positions of leverage to address issues of police brutality\, systematic biases\, and lack of services. As a writer\, artist\, activist\, political organizer and teacher\, Che has cracked glass ceilings and shattered negative stereotypes about hip-hop. Among other awards\, he won a Grammy for co-writing “Jesus Walks” with Kanye West and an Academy Award for his work on the song “Glory\,” featured in the film Selma. \nThe event is free and open to the public.
