SUMMARY:Helping to Restore Civility in America Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Join the Institute of World Affairs and Trade for the Helping to Restore Civility in America Town Hall. The open-format dialog will feature special guests\, including former Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa)\, and former Rep. Reid Ribble (R-WI). \nThe town hall is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday\, November 3rd at Rockford University’s Fisher Chapel. The forum is free and open to the public and will help answer questions about Congress’ role in America\, if and how it reflects the country’s divisions\, and if Congress can help resolve those problems. The discussion also will include insight on whether citizens can do anything to mend America’s challenge while also reflecting on media’s role in these times. \nLoebsack is a former political science professor at Cornell College in Iowa. He was elected in 2007 after unseating a 30-year incumbent. He served on the committee on armed forces\, subcommittee on personnel and readiness\, and the committee on education. He is professor emeritus at Cornell College and continues to lecture and write. \nRibble was employed at his family’s roofing business when he won a three-way primary and unseated an incumbent in the 2010 election. He served on the transportation and infrastructure committee\, as well as the foreign affairs committee\, serving on the subcommittees on emerging threats and terrorism\, and non-proliferation. He is the president of the National Roofing Contractors Association. He teaches leadership to officers from all military branches at annual conferences at the Army War College. \nFormer Congressman Don Manzullo will moderate the event with Catherine Forslund\, the chair of the Historical and International Studies Department and Director of the Institute of World Affairs and Trade at Rockford University. \nThe program is being co-hosted by Rockford University\, the Institute of World Affairs and Trade at Rockford University (IWAT)\, Rockford Public Library\, and Rockford Chamber of Commerce\, and US Association of Former Members of Congress (Congress to Campus program). \n  \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Beaux’ Stratagem
DESCRIPTION:The Beaux’ Stratagem (play)\nNovember\, 18 – 21\, 2021 (Thursday-Saturday\, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday 2 p.m.)\nMaddox Theatre\, Clark Arts Center\nDirector\, Prof. Deborah Mogford \nThornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of George Farquhar classic 18th century farce\, The Beaux’ Stratagem\, tells the tale of Aimwell and Archer\, two charming\, dissolute young men who have spent their fortunes carousing in London. Now shamed and debt-ridden\, they flee to provincial Lichfield. They decide the only way to recover their wealth is to marry for money. They take rooms at the local inn posing as master and servant. While in town they encounter the young\, beautiful\, wealthy\, and perceptive Dorinda and Mrs. Sullen. Will the Beaux\, Aimwell and Archer\, succeed in their stratagem? That remains to be seen because here in this seemly gentle countryside they encounter a teeming variety of human obstacles to their marriage plans: a crooked landlord\, a fearsome highwayman\, a fervent French Count\, a maid on the make\, a drunken husband\, a furious butler\, a natural healer of dubious abilities\, and a strange\, turbulent priest. Maybe\, if they can survive the misunderstandings\, mistaken identities\, and masterly sword play they may attain both wealth and love. \nFor a list of all our performances please visit the Performing Arts webpage. https://www.rockford.edu/artslectures/performingarts/\nFor tickets\, call the Rockford University Box Office at (815) 226-4100. Adults $12\, Students & Seniors $9\nAll Rockford University students may receive one free ticket to each RU show.
