IL Coop Internships vs. Off-Campus Federal
Work Study
These are similar programs, as they both are classified as off-campus
employment and positions pay a minimum hourly wage of $8.00/hr.
Below are the requirements of each program:
Illinois Cooperative Internship Program:
The program is funded through an annual grant from the Illinois
Board of Higher Education. This internship is defined as an academically
related work and study experience with business, industry, government
or other agencies and organizations. The purpose of the grant is
to give students the opportunity to support their academic endeavors
with less dependency on student loans. Under this program, the hiring
agency will be responsible for 33% (non-profit) or 50% (for-profit)
of the student employee’s hourly wage and the remainder will
be funded through IL Coop grant funds. All IL Coop Internships are
located in the local Rockford area.
In order to qualify
for the IL Cooperative Internship Program, students must
be in good academic standing at Rockford College, they must
be an Illinois resident (or parent/legal guardian is a legal
resident of Illinois), they have the ability to work up
to 15 hours per week and they are looking for practical
experience in their field of study.

Off-Campus Federal Work Study Program:
Through this program, Rockford area non-profit agencies
are able to hire Rockford College students who qualify for
Federal Work-Study funds for off-campus employment. Under
this program, the hiring agency will be responsible for
25% of the student employee’s hourly rate and 75%
will be funded by Rockford College, using Federal Work-Study
funds. This program, designed to comply with the federal
government’s community service mandate, will provide
employment training to students, while providing low cost
assistance to area agencies.
