Chair and Assistant Professor Phyllis D. Thomson began as Chair of the Nursing Department for the fall semester at Rockford College in summer of 2012. She obtained her education at the following institutions: Associate Degree in Nursing from Triton College, River Grove, IL; Baccaluareate Degree in Nursing and Psychology from Elmhurst College, Elmnurst, IL; Master’s Degree in Community Nursing from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL; and her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Loyola University, Chicago, IL. Dr. Thomson’s dissertation was a quantitative study titled Power: Deans and Directors in Nursing Education.
Nursing Clinical experience has been in Community Health and Home Health. This work included doing home visiting for a wide variety of patients of all ages and needs, and participating in prenatal clinics and well-child clinics. In addition, Dr. Thomson spent a great deal of time in a March of Dimes program working with pregnant teens in high schools and junior high schools.
Dr. Thomson has experience teaching both Fundamentals and Community Nursing at the Diploma level of nursing education at Ravenswood School of Nursing. She also has had experience and at the Baccalaureate level of nursing in Community and Psychiatric Nursing and at the Master’s level of nursing in Theories and Practicum Supervision for Nurse Educator students at St. Anthony College of Nursing.
Dr. Thomson has educational administrative experience as follows: Director—Ravenswood School of Nursing; Executive Dean—Ravenswood College of Nursing; and Associate Dean Health Professions—Elgin Community College. In addition, Dr. Thomson consulted with McHenry County College in the development of their Associate Degree program. Dr. Thomson completed her Nurse Educator Certification in July 2011. Dr. Thomson is a member of Sigma Theta Tau and the Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders.
