ROCKFORD, Ill. - The men's soccer team was looking to level its record before heading into the conference portion of its schedule when it welcomed the Knox College Prairie Fire to Sam Greeley Field on Sunday afternoon. It was the final game the Regents 3-game homestand and the second straight season the Regents and Prairie Fire have met with the Rockford winning the matchup last season 3-0.

It was a very good first half of action with both teams seeing opportunities to score goals. Despite being outshot 9-6 in the first half, it was the Regents who struck first on Sunday afternoon. For the second straight game it was freshman Devin Standard (Monroe Center, Ill./Stillman Valley) who got the Regents on the board scoring a goal with just over 4 minutes remaining in the first half. Standard was set up nicely on the play by senior Derek Garcia (Derby, Kan./Derby) who was credited with his first assist this year.

As the second half continued to progress along, it appeared as though Standard's goal would be enough to win the match. However, Knox continued to pepper shots at the Rockford goal until one finally snuck in during the 78th minute to tie it at 1-1. An unfortunate break against the Regents led to Knox's second goal off of a Rockford foul in the box. The Prairie Fire converted on the penalty shot to giving them their first lead late in the match. Rockford was unable to muster any real threat in the final 5 minutes and lost 2-1.

One of the telling factors in the match was that the Regents were seeming stuck on defense for the majority of the second half. Consequently, Rockford was outshot 18-2 by Knox in the second half of the match on Sunday.

The men's soccer team will enjoy some time off before they begin the Northern Athletics Conference portion of their schedule on September 15th. The Regents will travel to Lakeland College to take on the Muskies at 3 p.m.

DUBUQUE, Iowa - After being shut out it its home opener, the Rockford College football team took to the road looking to even its record and pick up its first win of the season. The Regents lined up against the Duhawks of Loras College who were also shutout in their season opener last week. The two teams have squared off in each of the last two years with Loras winning both matchups including a 48-17 victory for the Duhawks last season.

It was a difficult first half for Rockford as they simply could not find any rhythm offensively and were held to just 60 yards of total offense including just 17 passing yards. However, despite the first half offensive struggles the Regents found themselves only down 14-0 at the half.

Rockford came out in the second half with a good opening drive moving the ball all the way down to the Loras 24-yard line. However, the Regents were unable to take advantage of the lengthy drive as they got bogged down near the red zone committing a couple of costly penalties and turned the ball over on downs. Loras took advantage scoring on its next two possessions making it a 28-0 lead and essentially putting the game away.

Rockford scored its first points of the year in the forth quarter when quarterback Aabed Nekrawesh (Fremont, Calif./American) tossed a pair of touchdown passes. The first one came after the Regents special teams gave its offense great field position off a blocked punt by junior Scott Dooley (Pasadena, Calif./San Marino). Nekrawesh took advantage throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dane Kirk (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle Township). Nekrawesh would later connect on an 82-yard touchdown pass to Delroy Russell (Richmond, Calif./Albany) making it a 28-14 ballgame with just over three minutes remaining in the game. That would be as close as the Regents would get as the Duhawks would hold on for a 28-14 win.

Nekrawesh finished the game 14-32 for 205 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Matthew Botello (Whitter, Calif./Pioneer) ran the ball effectively for the Regents carrying it 16 times for 81 yards.

Defensively the Regents were led by a pair of young talented local players. Freshman Michael Krieter (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) had a team-high 9 tackles for the Regents in his second collegiate start. Sophomore Seth Swinehart (Rockford, Ill./East) was again all over the field making 8 tackles with 2 coming behind the line of scrimmage including 1 quarterback sack. Swinehart also had a pass breakup as well.

The football team will look to win its first game of the season next Saturday when they welcome Olivet College to Sam Greeley Field. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford College women's soccer team took the road on Saturday looking for their first win of the 2012 season when they traveled to Milwaukee, Wis. to face off against the Mount Mary College Blue Angels. The last meeting between the two teams took place during the 2010 season when the Regents defeated the Blue Angels 5-2.

It was a completely different story this season as the Regents fell behind early in the match. Just over seven minutes into the game the Blue Angels struck first scoring on a breakaway and taking a 1-0. Mount Mary would score more times in the first half making it a 4-0 Blue Angel lead. It was sophomore Tara Crothers (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) who cut it to a 4-1 match heading into the half, scoring on a breakaway off of a nice pass from Bridgette Johnson (Pecatonica, Ill./Winnebago).

The second half was very similar to the first half as Rockford was unable to build any momentum. The lone highlight of the half was provided by sophomore Callie Schmidt (Rockford, Ill./Jefferson). Schmidt took advantage of a Blue Angel turnover and scored her third goal of the season. However, it would not be enough as Mount Mary would tack on two second half goals to win the match 6-2.

The women's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, September 11th for its home opener against the Aurora University Spartans. The match will be played in Sam Greeley Field with a 4:00 p.m. start time.

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Following a tough home loss on Tuesday, the men's soccer team took to the field looking to get back on the winning sideline as they welcomed the Clarke University Crusaders. The Crusaders entered the match with a 1-0 record while the Regents came into today sporting a 1-1 record.

It was again a pretty evenly matched first half of soccer between the Regents and the Crusaders. Clarke struck first scoring the opening goal around the 24 minute mark in the first half. It turned out to be an unlucky break for the Regents as the shot appeared to graze off a Regent defender and change direction as it rolled into the goal. As the Regents were perhaps still trying to figure out what happened, the Crusaders made it a 2-0 game less than two minutes later and would take that lead into the half.

After the Crusaders made it a 3-0 lead shortly into the second half, the Regents would answer with a goal of their own. Freshman Devin Standard (Monroe Center, Ill./Stillman Valley) got the Regents on the board in the 51st minute of the match. Standard took advantage of a misplaced Crusader header in front of the goal lacing it into the corner of the net. Shortly after making it a 3-1 game, Clarke would take advantage of another strange play heading the ball into the goal from the top of the goalie box. Neither team would score for the remainder of the match giving Clarke a 4-1 victory.

After a couple of days off, the men's soccer team returns to the field on Sunday, September 9th when they welcome the Knox College Prairie Fire to Sam Greeley Field. The non-conference match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

ROCKFORD, Ill. - It has been an interesting start to the 2012 season for the Regents men's soccer team. They opened up their campaign on the road this past Saturday in the pouring rain and high winds in a match at Robert Morris University Springfield before returning home to play North Central College in the extreme heat and humidity.

The season opener against Robert Morris was a hard fought low scoring match. Rockford was able to break through first half when senior Derek Garcia (Derby, Kan./Derby) scored Rockford's first goal of the season about 15 minutes into the match. Freshman Paul Cardone (Ithica, N.Y./Ithica) set Garcia up on the play with nicely with pass coming off of a counter attack. Rockford would hold on to the 1-0 lead until the 85th minute when Robert Morris tied the match at 1-1 and appeared to send the match into overtime. However, it was a different Regents team this season as Diego Ramos (Chicago, Ill./Thomas Jefferson) struck right back and scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute off an excellent pass from senior Nathan Sweet (Flint, Mich./Grand Blanc). Rockford's 2-1 victory marked the second time in as many years that the men's soccer team has won its opening match of the season.

Rockford then kicked off the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday against the North Central College Cardinals. The Regents played an excellent first half of soccer as senior goalkeeper Mick Goulding (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) made numerous outstanding saves keeping it to a 1-0 North Central lead at the half. The second half was a different story though as the sweltering heat eventually wore down the Regents and the Cardinals took advantage. North Central scored six second half goals including three in the final ten minutes to win 7-0. With the loss Rockford falls to 1-1 on the season.

The men's soccer team returns to the field on Thursday, September 6th when they host Clarke University. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at Sam Greeley Field.

ROCKFORD - Ill. - For the first time in decades the Regents cross country teams opened their seasons in front of their home fans with a race around the Rockford College campus. The course was set up for runners to be able to make loops on the outer edge of campus around the athletic facilities. The women's ran first around a 2.5 mile course followed by the men running a 3.5 mile course.

The women's team got their season off to an excellent start winning their dual meet against the College of Lake County. The women's cross country team had three of the top four finishers in the race. Junior Genesis Cerrato (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) picked up right where she left off last season winning in her first race of the year. Cerrato finished with a time of 16:10 which was 41 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Junior transfer Elizabeth Tidei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community) came in second in her first race in a Regent uniform posting a time of 16:51. Freshman Jessica Kirshenbaum (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) finished 4th in the race with a time of 17:43 just behind her sister who ran unattached on Saturday. The ladies easily defeated the College of Lake County 19-26 despite only using four runner's scores for Lake County.

The men's team was locked in as close of a match as possible between two teams. The Regents however did come out on the short side losing the dual to the College of Lake County 28-27. Freshman Zach Quinn (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) opened some eyes with his second place finish in his first collegiate race. Quinn finished just 7 seconds off the lead posting a time of 19:06. It was indeed an impressive performance as he trailed only an unattached runner earning himself and the Regents first place points for his effort. Sophomores Carl Rapp (Union, Ill./Belvidere North) and Tim Lydy (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) each started off their seasons with top 6 finishes as well. Rapp finished fifth in the race with a time of 19:30 and Lydy completed the course in 20:17, good enough for a sixth place finish.

Both cross country teams will take part in the Falcon Invitational at Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday, September 15th. The women will race first beginning at 11 a.m. with the men to follow at noon.

The Regents jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead less than eight minutes into the match. It was sophomore Callie Schmidt (Rockford, Ill./Jefferson) who received a perfect pass from junior Jamie Logan (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) and smashed it into the goal from about six yards out. Flores also has professional playing experience, playing in Venezuela during the 06-07 seasons. The 2012 squad we be one with a lot of youth on it as there are just 5 returning players for last years team including 1 senior.

Leading the offense for the Regents in 2012 will be sophomore Callie Schmidt (Rockford, Ill./Jefferson). Schmidt recorded 7 goals and 1 assist thru 8 games in 2011 before an injury cut her season short. The Regents will also turn to junior Ashley Eggert (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem). Eggert was the lone Regent to play in and start all 15 matches for the Regents in 2011 playing mostly on the defensive side of the field. Eggert recorded 2 shots on goal and also received NAC All-Sportsmanship honors in 2011. The defensive will be led by the Regents lone senior Sarah Harkness (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North). Harkness ended 2011 with 1 goal on 3 shot attempts. Known for her sideline front flip throw in, the Regents will look to Harkness to create more scoring opportunities with her passing abilities in 2012.

The Regents open the 2012 season on the road at Eureka College on September 1st. The Regents won last years match 6-2, which featured 2 goals by Schmidt and 1 by Harkness.
Rockford, Ill. - The Rockford College Men’s Soccer team is looking to improve upon a 4-14 campaign and 12th place NAC finish in 2011. The Regents are led by first year head coach Jeremy Vann and are looking to rebuild the program with a mix of new faces and experience as the Regents return 9 players from the 2011 team including 6 seniors. Vann takes over a Regents team that was competitive in 2011 despite their 4-14 finish. Coach Vann comes to Rockford College after coaching at the high school level in Arvada, Col. where Vann led the program to an unprecedented 3 straight winning seasons as well as 3 straight trips to the 5A state tournament. Vann also has college coaching experience serving as an assistant coach for Cornell College in Iowa.

Leading the Regents into 2012 will be starting goalkeeper and 2011 2nd team All-NAC selection senior Mick Goulding (Midlothian, Ill./Brenen). Goulding ended 2011 with a NAC high 97 saves as well as a .735 save percentage. The Regents offensive attack will be led by senior Samuel Medina-Conchi (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald W Regan). Medina-Conchi finished 2011 with 2 goals and 1 assist while putting 13 shots on goal. Fellow senior Nathan Sweet (Flint, Mich./Grand Blanc) will also be looked upon to provide offense to the Regents in 2012. Sweet ended 2011 with 1 assist and 8 shots on goal.

The Regents 2011 season was a frustrating one as the Regents were on the wrong side of 5 games decided by 1 goal including 2 games that went to overtime. The Regents look to be competitive in 2012 and open the year with Robert Morris University-Springfield on Sept. 1st. Robert Morris finished 2011 with a 2-6 mark and this will be the first meeting between the two schools.
2012 Football Season Preview

Rockford, Ill. – The Rockford College football team heads into the 2012 season looking to turn the corner and find itself back on the winning sideline. The Regents have struggled over the past few seasons to find consistent production on both sides of the ball. Rockford ended its 2011 season with back-to-back losses where the Regents had a chance to win the game on its final possession. The 2012 season appears to have a brighter outlook than previous ones as the team now boasts a much larger roster including some key returners and new players looking to make an immediate impact.

On the offensive side of the ball everything starts with sophomore quarterback Jacob Gorsuch (Cherry Valley, Ill./Jefferson). Gorsuch showed flashes of brilliance at times during his eight starts as a freshman. The sophomore threw for 1,119 yards and 6 touchdowns while rushing for 3 more in his first season of college football. He will be joined by a group of familiar faces in the backfield and brand new core of wide receivers. Senior running back Isaiah Whack (Deltona, Fla./Deltona) will get the bulk of the carries for the Rockford offense this season. Whack was the team’s leading rusher last season and averaged 4.5 yards per carry. In his junior season, the Florida native scored the only three touchdowns of his collegiate career and will look to add to that total this year. Sophomore fullbacks Nick Nowdomski (Coal City, Ill./Coal City) and Milton Philips (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) round out the Regent backfield. Nowdomski returns to the lineup after missing the second half of the season last year due to an injury. Philips filled in admirably in Nowdomski’s absence, and had a career day against Benedictine, the 2012 NAC Champions, scoring both a rushing and receiving touchdown. A pair of transfers leads a brand new group of receivers this year. Jared Baldonado (Phoenix, Ariz./Copper Canyon) and Mike Balque (Long Beach California/Lakewood) will try to replace the loss of 1st Team All-NAC receiver Anastacio Zamba.

Defensively the Regents will be a lot more experienced this season. NAC Co-Freshman of the Year Seth Swinehart (Rockford, Ill./East) returns and will anchor the defense from the linebacker position. Swinehart was all over the field last season leading the Regents with 91 tackles. He was tied for second on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss, recorded 1 sack, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass. Rockford returns two seniors to its defensive backfield in Jeremiah Montgomery (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) and Andrew Hildebrand (Belvidere, Ill./North). Montgomery earned 2nd Team All-NAC honors last season for his stellar play at cornerback. The Chicago native proved to be a shutdown corner for the Regents last season. He intercepted 4 passes returning 2 of them for touchdowns including one for 90 yards to break the school record. Montgomery also forced two fumbles and picked one of them up to run it in for a score as well. Hildebrand will again play the roll of a hard hitting ball hawking safety for the Regents. Last season the Belvidere native was second on the team with 69 tackles including a team-high 39 unassisted tackles. He also intercepted 2 passes and broke up another one. Up front, the Regents will try to find a combination of familiar faces and new additions to stuff the opposing run game and pressure the quarterback. Manuel Macias (Marengo, Ill./Marengo Community) returns for his sophomore season after a playing in eight games as a freshman. Macias recorded 20 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss. The Regents defense is looking to improve on the amount of yardage it surrenders this season while continuing to generate turnovers. Rockford’s defense forced an impressive 24 turnovers last season tying them for third in the Northern Athletics Conference.

The Regents will open up their 2012 campaign on September 1st at home against Westminster College. The Regents are 2-5 against the Blue Jays since Rockford started its football program in 2000. Last season Westminster defeated Rockford 51-24 to end the Regents two game winning streak in the series. Rockford fell behind early last season trailing 39-10 at the half. The Regents will have to do a better job of securing the football this time as they threw 4 interceptions, lost a fumble and turned the ball over on downs once leading to three Westminster touchdowns. Offensively the Regents did do a good job capitalizing off of Blue Jay miscues scoring three touchdowns of their own. Whack was the Regents leading rusher in the game gaining 58 yards on 11 carries and punching the ball into the end zone for a score. Defensively it was Swinehart and Hildebrand who led the way with 9 and 6 tackles respectively. Kickoff for the 2012 season opener will be at 1:00 p.m. at Sam Greeley Field in Rockford, Ill.
