Job Title:           GA for Student Activities, Lion’s Den, and Commuter Lounge

Department:      Student Life


The Graduate Assistant for Student Activities, the Lion’s Den, and the Commuter Lounge will assist in the day to day operations in the area and will report directly to the Director of Student Activities and the Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement.  The primary emphasis of this position is to assist in the implementation of student programs with the goal to increase student involvement, increase commuter involvement, and increase utilization of Lion’s Den space.       


·         Spend time becoming familiar with the programming efforts at RC

·         Be knowledgeable of the resources available on campus to all students

·         Make student referrals utilizing available resources

·         Assist in the preparation of all activities linked with CAB, Student Activities, Orientation, Welcome Weeks, Family Weekend, Homecoming, April Weekend, Sibling Weekend, etc.

·         Complete specific Orientation and Activity tasks assigned

·         Assist director throughout with programming and events

·         Prepare and send correspondence to students

·         Assist in scheduling student events

·         Observe/shadow CAB and commuter student meetings with Director

·         Hold meetings while being observed by Director for constructive feedback

·         Once Director and GA feel comfortable, the GA may conduct meetings unsupervised and will have their own supervision load (CAB)

·         Assist in gathering data for month end and year end reports  

·         Maintain Website/ Event Calendar/ Event Publicity

·         Complete end of semester status reports on programs and seek feedback for next semester programming

·         Research "Best Practices” in commuter students, future programs and other topics as needed


    Candidate must be admitted into the MAT or MBA program
  • Ideal candidate will have undergraduate experience in student life/student development and be familiar with co-curricular activities in higher education.
  • Needs to have knowledge of publisher, excel, and word; graphic design/ editing a plus.


Employees work in a professional office environment that is highly visible to members and the college community. Normal office conditions prevail. Office work is performed primarily indoors.  Ability to be available at times outside normal working hours for meetings and events is a must; frequent night and weekends required. 



  • Leadership Skills- GA will gain and demonstrate leadership skills (timeliness, accountability, responsibility, and focus) to serve as role model for peers, fellows, student workers, and students in general that they work with.
  • Conflict Resolution- GA will learn how to mediate and resolve conflicts between students, groups, and colleagues to achieve program goals.
  • Supervision (of Student Workers) - GA will utilize/ practice supervision skills (accountability, delegation, time management) in their work with student workers.  They may also be asked to help supervise another student group (fellows) in a limited capacity.
  • Social Skills – GA will utilize/practice verbal/non-verbal communication skills (eye contact, listening, open-ended questions) to help assess the needs of our students and will use written skills to communicate through emails, letters, etc.
  • Scientific Skills – GA will utilize spreadsheets to maintain data and as a documentation tool. They may also be asked to help compile and determine percentages on survey data.   


GA must comply with the Rockford College Code of Conduct and sign a confidentiality statement.  GA will have access to confidential student files, fiscal data, and evaluations.
