Job Title: Technical Services Assistant
Reports To: Technical Services Librarian
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, permanent, fulltime position.


The Technical Services Assistant (TSA) reports to the Technical Services Librarian.
The TSA is responsible for the management of the library serials collections, both print and non-print formats. [Serials include newspapers, magazines, academic journals, databases, and other materials that are published on a daily, weekly, monthly or other regular basis.]
The TSA is also responsible for assisting the Technical Services Librarian in the procedures relating to acquisitions, cataloging, materials processing, and revenue generating as assigned. The accuracy of the work of the Technical Services Assistant (TSA) is reflected in both internal [OPAC - Online Public Access Catalog] and external [OCLC WorldCat] access, and therefore plays an integral role in data retrieval for end-users and librarians, and hence supporting the strategic plan of Rockford College.



Serials Management – 50%
•Claiming, tracking, and check-in tasks for print format;
•Act as vendor liaison for all formats;
•Continual maintenance of bibliographic records to sustain quality of OPAC;
•Maintain WorldCat holdings in OCLC
•Monitoring online databases to ensure completeness and uninterrupted access;
•Renewal and orders/cancellations for all formats;
•Collect monthly usage statistics for both print and non-print formats;
•Maintain internal serial database tools;

Technical Services Assistant – 50%
•Assist with any phase of technical services routines [deselection,copy-cataloging,editing item records in the OPAC];
•Assist in the maintenance of WorldCat holdings in OCLC;
•Complete processing of all library materials;
•Supply accurate monthly statistical reports to the Technical Services Librarian;
•Maintain internal acquisitions/ requests database tools; 
•Complete basic repairs to damaged books and other library materials;
•Maintain supplies inventory for processing and repair of library materials;


Required qualifications:
•Competency with management level access in online library catalog modules and serial databases
•Familiarity with AACR2 MARC record fields to perform copy cataloging as necessary;
•Basic knowledge of library call number structure and shelf finding in LC classification;

 •Ability to work collaboratively in a small department;

Preferred qualifications:

Competency in OCLC Connexion, III Millennium and EBSCONET

•Methodical nature with an aptitude for careful, detailed, analytical work

•Ability to organize and work with a minimum of supervision;
•Excellent oral and written communication skills; Legible writing and printing;

•Flexibility, common sense and patience;

Interest in pursuing a career in Library and Information Science

The physical and mental demands of this position are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions. While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to
•Sit at a computer workstation for extended periods of time;
•Stand, walk, stoop, and kneel;
Lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
•Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus;
•Repetitive motions:
o handling of individual library materials
o keyboarding – personal computer
o mouse – personal computer
o additional processing procedures

Work includes duties performed in a professional office environment within the library that occasionally necessitates being highly visible to members of the college community, and to various external constituents. Normal office conditions prevail. Office work is performed primarily indoors. Ability to be available at times and locations outside normal parameters for meetings and events is a must.
