Congratulations to the Class of 2011!
A message from college president Robert L. Head, Ph.D.
Dear students, faculty and staff:
We have entered the final week of the semester. Let me wish our students a successful journey as you begin final exams. Additionally, I hope you all enjoy a safe summer.
On Sunday at the Coronado Theatre, we will celebrate our 157th Commencement. Degrees will be awarded to 367 students from 12 states and several countries, including Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, India, Kyrgyzstan, India, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the UK. Baccalaureate degrees awarded will total 224. There will be 116 MAT and 27 MBA degrees awarded. Congratulations to all of our graduates!
Our commencement speaker will be Thomas S. Johnson. Tom was born in Rockford, received his undergraduate degree from Rockford College in 1964 and earned his law degree from Harvard University. He received an honorary degree from Rockford College in 1989 upon the conclusion of his term as Chairman of the College's Board of Trustees. Tom is a partner with WilliamsMcCarthy, LLP and concentrates his practice in the area of estate planning. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the only Rockford lawyer so honored. I look forward to Tom’s remarks.
The campus will undergo a facelift this summer. Several projects, pending approval by the Board of Trustees, are scheduled for the next three months. We are targeting a significant amount of work on our roads and parking lots; a renovation of the Jane Addams Memorial Peace Garden; modifications to a few of our residence halls; and several additional minor projects.
The Weekly Update will continue to be published over the summer. My colleagues on the Executive Council will join me and contribute updates to keep you abreast of events.
Have a great week!
Robert L. Head, Ph.D.
Congratulations to this Year’s Excellence in Teaching Award Winners!
Congratulations to Faculty winner Jeff Fahrenwald, director of the Masters in Business program, and Adjunct Faculty winner Sherry Zenk, Learning Resource Center instructor. The criteria for both awards are:
· Knowledge of his/her discipline
· Respect for students
· Creative course development
· Campus Leadership
Jeff has been with Rockford College since 1988 and is the director of the MBA program. He teaches in the areas of human relations, management, leadership and international studies in the MBA program. Jeff is recognized for being enthusiastic, available and always responsive to students’ questions. He also is known for bringing real life business experiences and examples to the classroom. One comment shared says, "Jeff is not interested in a summary of a case or a report; he is more interested in how a problem can be solved. If we provide a solution (regardless of how crazy it is), he looks for our reasoning behind that solution.” Another student notes, "He seems to be very well organized and prepared for each class as well as sets high expectations for his students. He always has a great way of engaging students and getting us to look at issues in a variety of ways.”
Sherry has been teaching at the Rockford College Learning Center for 15 years. Sherry is known for her dedication to students who may need some extra help with Reading and Math work. Sherry is a strong advocate for her students and goes beyond the confines of the classroom to help them succeed. She has taken on many roles Learning Center, all aimed at increasing students’ ability to learn and do well in their courses. Learning Center Director Jeanne Grey wrote this about Sherry, "One area that stands out to me is her dedication to our students who are struggling. She goes beyond the expectations set forth by the college. She meets with the students outside of class, helps them make plans for academic success, and is truly an advocate for them. It is a joy to watch her teach. She explains, is patient, has a delightful sense of humor, utilizes effective teaching strategies, and presents the material in a manner that the students understand the material.”
Congratulations again to Jeff and Sherry on this noted recognition!
