ROCKFORD —
Long before offensive plays or defensive schemes for next season were discussed, new Rockford College football coach Vic Wallace and his staff focused on a more pressing concern.

"We have put 100 percent of our effort for the first six weeks into recruiting,” said Wallace, who took the job in January.

"We have not drawn one play on the board. I never talked to my assistant coaches about what we are going to run until we got into the seventh week.”

The Regents return just 27 players from last year’s winless team. They recently began their four weeks of spring practice.

Wallace, who has nearly 35 years of experience at the NCAA Division I, II and III and NAIA levels, would like to have 70-80 players on the roster by fall.

"It will be exciting if we get 85, but I don’t want to put it out of the realm of things to have 100.” he said. "We are working really hard.”

The recruiting effort was first directed at Rockford high schools and then expanded to players within a two-hour radius.

"In the teams that I’ve had in the past, 80 percent almost every year were from a two-hour radius,” said Wallace, who has a 176-109-5 career coaching record. "Then we would go outside and follow leads.”

Wallace and his staff have stressed three main selling points to the potential recruits: Immediate playing time is available; they would play for a successful coach; and they will determine the identity of the rebuilding program.

"Those are all positive things for our recruiting,” Wallace said.

The Regents have a handful of commitments so far, but Wallace didn’t expect the bulk to come until June.

"Then we will start to see some dividends,” he said.

Wallace’s staff includes line coach Patrick Babcock, who was the interim head coach last season.
