COLLEGE REPORT: Gaff earns Player of the Week honor in GLVC

Stats don't lie. But Weslie Gaff, a Streator grad and University of Missouri-St. Louis junior volleyball player, is always amazed by them.
"I never think that I am hitting as well as I am hitting," said Gaff, who earned the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Player of the Week after helping UMSL defeat Rockhurst University (3-1) and Drury University (3-0). "Individual honors are great, but it is definitely secondary to getting a win. I don't think that I could have been selected if we had not won."
In both cases, Gaff hit over .435. In the three-game win over Drury, Gaff had 12 kills, five blocks (one solo) and two digs. She hit .550 in that contest.
She finished with 13 kills and a .435 hitting percentage in the win over Rockhurst. She also had five blocks (one solo).
"This is the best we have been in a long time," said Gaff, who is hitting .359 through the first 19 matches. "My only goal is to make it to the NCAA Division II Tournament."
Gaff is leading the way. In the first 19 matches, she has 192 kills, 57 blocks (12 solos), 38 digs, six assists and three aces.
At press time, UMSL had improved to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They are ranked 21st in the NCAA Division II Poll commissioned by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. ...
The McKendree University football team got back on the winning track very quickly, defeating Waldorf College 54-7. Streator grad Terry Kennedy, a McKendree offensive lineman, played in the contest and helped the Bearcats post 479 yards of offense. Of the yards, 334 were rushing yards.
McKendree, which is ranked 19th in the latest National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics poll, is 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-States Football Association-Midwest League. ...
It took three overtimes, but Monmouth College finally gave Ripon College its first lost of the year, beating them 51-45. Seneca graduate Sam Hoster, a Monmouth College defensive player, had four tackles (three solos). Monmouth is 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the Midwest Conference. ...
The Eureka College football slipped to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference with a 36-14 loss to Crown College. Fieldcrest grads Darin Meierhofer and Jordan Krone, as well as Flanagan-Cornell grads Drew Duffy and Craig Wilson all hit the gridiron for Eureka.
Meierhofer finished with 13 tackles (five solos). Duffy finished with six tackles (two solos), while Wilson finished with two solo tackles. On the offensive side of the ball, Krone competed 1 of 2 passes for 15 yards. ...
Flanagan-Cornell grad Megan Laughlin pounded down 10 kills as her college team, University of South Carolina, defeated Mississippi State University 3-2. Laughlin also had six assists, two digs and two block assists.
In South Carolina's 3-0 loss to University of Alabama, Laughlin had five kills and two digs. South Carolina is 4-13 overall and 1-6 in the Southeastern Conference. ...
Streator grad Jon Richards finished 116th at the Bradley University Cross Country Classic, which was held at Newman Golf Course in Peoria. The Bradley harrier finished the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 16 seconds. As a team, Bradley finished 15th with 383 points.
The University of Iowa Hawkeyes took first with 67 points. ...
Rockford College earned its third Northern Athletics Conference win by topping Milwaukee School of Engineering 3-1. Rockford's Emily Kaufman, a Seneca grad, finished the contest with nine kills, eight digs and five aces. Rockford is 4-14 overall and 3-5 in the NAC. ...
Aurora University sophomore Noah Martin, a Fieldcrest grad, completed 2 of 4 passes for 36 yards as AU defeated Maranatha Baptist Bible College 41-7. Aurora is 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the NAC. ...
Rockford was shut out by Concordia University-Chicago 44-0. With the loss, Rockford slipped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the NAC.
Former Streator offensive lineman Ryan Zima started at right guard and helped Rockford post 63 yards of offense. The Regents passed for 38 yards and rushed for 25 yards. ...
The Millikin University football team has dropped its first three College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin football games.
In a 38-7 loss to North Central College, its most recent loss, Millikin senior Brent Smith, a Flanagan-Cornell grad, had one solo tackle. Millikin is 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the league. ...
