Rockford, Ill. – The Rockford University Board of Trustees voted at its May 2014 meeting to approve the donation a 1.3 acre parcel of land to the Rockford Park District. The parcel is located directly to the north of the University’s Cummings Housing Complex and immediately adjacent to the eastern border of Reuben A. Aldeen Park. For years during rainy periods, the forested, low-lying area has retained overflow or spillage from the City of Rockford’s Alpine Dam. The ordinance to approve the donation from the University was passed by the Rockford Park District’s Board of Commissioners at the June 24 meeting.
Rockford University agreed to donate the land to the Rockford Park District with the stipulation that it be used solely for the overflow or spillage of water as a result of the operation and maintenance of the Alpine Dam. Deeding the land will help the City of Rockford complete planned repairs of the Alpine Dam by providing a dedicated overflow area.
Rockford University stressed the importance of maintaining the privacy and natural habitat the property provides to students who reside in the Cummings Complex and its surrounding homeowners. The deed of land includes provisions that prohibit deforestation and the construction of any structures on the property.
Rockford University is pleased to offer this land to the Rockford Park District so that repairs to the Alpine Dam can be made, ultimately benefiting many residents and property owners in Rockford.
