United States Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey culminates University’s spring forum series

Rockford, Ill. — United States Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, will be speaking at Rockford University on Tuesday, May 6, as part of the University’s spring forum series. She has been the nineteenth Poet Laureate of the United States and the Poet Laureate of Mississippi since 2012.

Trethewey is the author of four poetry collections: Domestic Work (2000); Bellocq’s Ophelia (2002); Native Guard (2006); and Thrall (2012). In 2007 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for Native Guard. She is also the author of Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, a collection of poetry, letters and essays. Currently, she is the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of English and Creative Writing at Emory University, where she also acts as director of the creative writing department.    

The lecture will be held Tuesday, May 6, 7 p.m., in Maddox Theatre, Clark Arts Center, 5050 E. State St., Rockford. This event is open and free to the public, however, tickets are required. Billington announced the appointment of Natasha Trethewey to second term as the Library's Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry for 2013-2014. The Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress serves as the nation's official lightning rod for the poetic impulse of Americans. During his or her term, the Poet Laureate seeks to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry.
