Rockford, Ill., — Rockford University is pleased to welcome United States Bankruptcy Judge Thomas Lynch to campus for the local kick-off of the CARE program, or Credit Abuse Resistance Education program. The presentation, led by Judge Lynch, who will also be accompanied by bankruptcy attorneys and court staff members, will take place on Wednesday, February 5, at 6:30 p.m., in the Grace Roper Lounge, first floor Burpee Center, on the Rockford University campus, 5050 East State Street, Rockford.

The CARE program was founded by now-retired U.S. Bankruptcy Judge John C. Ninfo II and is administered nationally by the American Bankruptcy Institute.  It was developed in an effort to address and educate young consumers’ involvement with credit. The program’s objective is to help young people obtain a basic familiarity with such fundamentals as:

  • The true cost of consumer credit;
  • How difficult it is to repay consumer debt incurred to buy into things that you really cannot afford and do not need;
  • The many consequences of financial distress and living beyond our means which are becoming more numerous and serious in our volatile economy;
  • The need to have savings and how to budget effectively with a view towards needs versus wants; and
  • The advantages living debt-free.
Judge Lynch shares, "All too often, financial illiteracy and misunderstanding of the risks and consequences of consumer credit plays a role in consumer debtors finding themselves in my courtroom. The CARE program has been offered with great success to students and young adults throughout the Chicago area and across the country. I believe this program will greatly benefit our young adults in Winnebago County and surrounding communities. I am excited to kick-off the program here at Rockford University.”

The presentation is offered free of charge.
