SUMMARY:

The Director of Career Services provides guidance and resources to assist students and Rockford College alumni with their career planning and search process. The position is housed under the banner of Student Life and is responsible for providing students/alumni with career counseling, assistance with career exploration, internships and job support, and pursuing graduate/professional admission. The Director of Career Services oversees delivery of services through workshops, individual appointments, classroom presentations, and through the use of technology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and implement strategy of career development for all students
  • Counsel and advise students individually and in group settings on topics such as: starting internships, the job search process, exploring career options, considering graduate/professional programs, creating professional looking documents such as cover letters, resumes, career objectives, etc.
  • Provide support and maintain relationships with all campus constituents to encourage career development of our students–this includes, but is not limited to, being a resource and support to faculty/staff members whose work includes a career development component, working with the admissions office to present career-related information to prospective students, etc.
  • Be the clearing house of information for internships, off-campus work study, and job opportunities for our students/alumni
  • Maintain records on career development success, including graduate surveys, and presenting the data to Admissions and other campus constituents
  • Provide career resources for alumni of the College
  • Stay current on employment trends
  • Build and maintain relationships with employers – including site visits for internships and serving as the Rockford College representative for job postings
  • Inquire from employers what skills they are seeking in new professionals and communicate the information to our current faculty so they in turn, can improve their teaching methods/outcomes
  • Make class presentations regarding career related topics
  • Create marketing materials, including a semi-annual newsletter, and maintain the Career Services web pages and Facebook page
  • Represent the College as a participating member institution for ISCPA – Illinois Small College Placement Association
  • Demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities in working with faculty, staff and students with diverse backgrounds including academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, and disabilities
  • Manage the off-campus federal work study program and Illinois Coop grant
  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for overseeing student workers and intern/Graduate Assistant 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Knowledge of career development
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills
  • Effective group presentation skills
  • Effective time management skills
  • High energy self-starter; must be able to take initiative with minimal guidance and be comfortable working both as an individual and as part of a team

  • Strong PC skills required including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.  

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree is required from an accredited institution (College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or Human Resources is preferred) 
  • Three years of experience in post-secondary education or other student personnel work or Human Resources is desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students, faculty and staff is necessary  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

This position requires standing, sitting, walking and some repetitive motion.  The position is generally a sedentary role with occasional lifting up to 25 pounds required.  The person in this position will work in an environment with frequent disruptions.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Employees work in a professional office environment that is highly visible to members and the College community. Normal office conditions prevail. Office work is performed primarily indoors.  Ability to be available at times outside normal working hours for meetings, ROAR Days, and career fairs is a must.
