Rockford, Ill. - The Regents volleyball team enters the 2012 season looking to build upon its success in the Northern Athletics Conference over the past two years. In each of the past two seasons, the Regents have made the conference tournament, and the 2012 season appears to be no different. Rockford hopes to blend a solid group of returning players with good class of new incoming student-athletes. However, the ladies will have something to prove this season as they were selected by the coaches to finish 11th in the Northern Athletics Conference.
The Regents return three of their five starters from last season including three of their top four net players. Rockford will lean on senior outside hitter Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) to lead the Regents on the offensive side. Lawler either led or finished second on the team in nearly every statistical category for Rockford last season. She led the Regents with 211 kills and 206 digs while finishing second with 564 attack attempts, 32 service aces and 29 total blocks. Junior Heather Hyland (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) and sophomore Laina Scheri (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) are two of the other major pieces of the puzzle returning for the 2012 campaign. Despite only being a sophomore and freshman respectively last season, Hyland and Scheri were both very productive on the court. The two combined for 324 kills, 42 aces, 338 digs, and 31 blocks. Rockford will look for senior transfer and defensive specialist Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) to help fill the void left by last year’s senior class.
The volleyball team will kick off its season on Saturday, September 1st when they compete in the Monmouth College Tournament against Monmouth College and Principia College. The ladies went 1-1 last year against the two teams defeating Principia 3-1 and losing to Monmouth 3-0. It was Lawler who led the way for the Regents posting a double-double against Principia with 12 kills and 11 digs. Hyland and Scheri each chipped in 4 kills in the win as well. The ladies first match on Saturday will be against Monmouth at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Principia match at 11:30 a.m. Rockford will then either play in the 5th place match or 3rd place match at 3:30 p.m. or the championship match at 5:30 p.m. pending the mornings results.
