Professor Donald Martin honored with Excellence in Teaching Award

Rockford, Ill., – Professor of Modern and Classical Languages Donald Martin, Ph.D., is the 2012 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award at Rockford College. The award is presented annually to full-time professor(s) at the College.

Dr. Donald Martin earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and went on to earn both his master’s and doctorate degrees in Classics from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Martin has been at Rockford College since 1970 and teaches courses in classical languages (Latin and Greek), classical civilization, and English. Dr. Martin is noted for his significant expertise in a variety of subject areas and his sincere interest in his students’ success.

In addition to his instruction at Rockford College, Dr. Martin taught English composition in the Department of Foreign Languages of the University of Cyprus, Nicosia in 1994. During a sabbatical leave in the fall of 1998 he returned to Greece to translate George Theotokas’ Astheneis kai odoiporoi (Invalids and Wayfarers), the author’s epic portrait of Greece during and after WWII.

Nominations for the awards come from throughout the college and winners are chosen by an ad hoc selection committee. The criteria for the award are knowledge of his/her discipline, respect for students, creative course development, advising, and campus leadership.
