VERONA, Wis. – The Regents softball team concluded its season on Tuesday afternoon when they hit the road to play the Edgewood College Eagles. The ladies have continued to improve all season ending this year playing some of their best softball. Tuesday’s doubleheader saw a pair of hotly contested games with Rockford coming out on top in game one and Edgewood making a late comeback in the second game.
After three scoreless innings to start the opening game of the doubleheader, the final four innings would see either Edgewood or Rockford score at least one run in each inning. Edgewood struck first scoring a run and taking a 1-0 lead after four innings of play. Junior Jennifer Zulkanycz (Norco, Calif./Norco) looked to answer the Eagles run when she singled through the left side of the infield to start the top of the fifth inning. She would score later in inning off an Edgewood error to tie the game at 1-1. Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mudelein) broke the tie one batter later ripping a two-out RBI double into left field. Right after the Regents took the 2-1 Edgewood would tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning at 2-2. However, Rockford would answer right back in the next half inning and score what turned out to be the winning run. Junior Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) hit her first home run of the season to break the tie and put Rockford up by one run for the second time in the game. After holding the Eagles in the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Regents added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Shortstop Alexis Ford (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) got on base with a leadoff single and scored two batters later on an Edgewood error. Senior Alyssa Novak (Utica, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) drove in the other run in the seventh with an RBI single into right field. The Eagles would not score in the bottom of the seventh as Rockford won game one by a final score of 5-2.
Pitcher Eryn Dougherty (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette) pitched brilliantly in her final outing as a Regent. The senior tossed her sixth complete game in nine starts for Rockford to pick up the win and improve her record to 6-4. Dougherty gave up six hits and just one earned run over her seven innings of work striking out two batters. The second game of the doubleheader ended up a much higher scoring affair than game one. The Regents would take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior Paige Newhuis (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) lead off the inning with her first home run as a Regent. Edgewood scored the next three runs taking a 3-1 lead into the final two innings of the game. It turned out to be an exciting two innings though as the Regents scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to retake the lead. Bridget Kennedy (Sugar Grove, Ill./Aurora Christian) and Jossilyn Jones each reached base to start the sixth. Junior Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) then crushed a three-run home run over the left field wall. Two batters later, Jessica Segalla (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) smashed her first home of the year putting Rockford up 5-3. After a run in the bottom of the sixth, Rockford took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. However, it was not meant to be as Edgewood mounted a rally and scored two runs to win the game 6-5.
The softball team finished the year up strong winning seven of their final ten games. During that run the Regents went 3-1 against teams in the 2012 NAC Tournament.
