LOVES PARK, Ill. – With its regular season schedule winding to a close, the Rockford College baseball team continued its march toward a Northern Athletics Conference Championship with its sweep over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Monday. The Regents pounded out 30 hits and scored 24 runs to improve their record to 22-14 overall and 17-3 in NAC play.
Rockford scored in seven of the eight innings in game one in support of the pitching staff. Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) started the game off lacing his fourteenth double of the season into left center. Dercks would score a couple of batters later on an RBI groundout. The Regents recorded a pair of three-run innings in the third and fifth to make it a 7-1 Rockford lead. Terry Wiltshire (Elizabeth, Ill./River Ridge) and Jimmy Dercks each reached base safely to start the third inning with Dercks later scoring on another RBI groundout. Senior Jake Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) had the big hit in the third inning driving in the final two runs of the inning on a triple over the right fielder’s head. With one out in the fifth inning, Kevin Miller (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove), Daryn Streed (Belvidere, Ill./North), and Jake Nicholson each singled to load the bases. Two batters later, senior Ryne Billesbach (Belvidere, Ill./North) cleared the bases with a 3-run double to left field to essentially put game one out of reach. Rockford would add two runs in the sixth courtesy of a Streed RBI single and a Nicholson RBI double and solo runs both the seventh and eighth innings to win game one 11-3.
Rockford used two pitchers in the opener with starter Daryn Streed picking up the win to improve his record to 5-1 this year. Streed threw seven innings giving up just 5 hits while allowing two earned runs and striking out one batter. Junior reliever Sean Gillette (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) threw two shutout innings in relief surrendering just two hits.
Game two had a similar feel to game one with the Regents offense scoring in every inning except the fifth. Jimmy Dercks and Kipton Bucey (Byron, Ill./Stillman Valley) opened the game with a walk and a bunt single to put two runners on for the middle of the order. Kevin Miller would take advantage driving in Dercks with an RBI single. Streed would drive in the other run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Regents would get two more runs in the second off a Jake Gorsuch (Cherry Valley, Ill./Jefferson) RBI ground out and a Dercks RBI single. It was more of the same in the third inning with Curt Daughenbaugh (Dakota, Ill./Dakota) delivering the big two-run single into right center making it a 6-3 Rockford lead. After a Warrior run in the top of the fourth, Streed quickly made it an 8-4 game with a two-run single of his own. Rockford would score two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings and tack on a final run in the eighth. Ryne Billesbach, Curt Daughenbaugh, Ryan Lesner (Algonquin, Ill./Harry D. Jacobs) and Jimmy Dercks each singled in a run over the final three innings to secure game two with a final score of 13-5.
The Regents used a total of five pitchers to win game two. Sophomore Corey Seipts (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) was the winning pitcher for the Regents improving his record to 2-3 this season. Sceipts gave Rockford six solid innings on the mound giving up four runs and striking out four Warrior batters. The Regents used four relievers over the final three innings who gave up a combined one run on four hits.
The baseball team has two non-conference games during the week before concluding NAC play on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Benedictine University. The baseball team can assure itself at least a share of the Northern Athletics Conference Championship with a split of the doubleheader and can clinch the title outright with two wins on Saturday.
