ROCKFORD, Ill. – Senior right-handed pitcher Jake Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) was named Northern Athletics Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season late Monday evening. This marks the second time Nicholson was named NAC Pitcher of the Week this season and the third time he has received the award over the past two seasons. The senior becomes the only baseball player in the highly competitive Northern Athletics Conference to have been named NAC Pitcher or Position Player of the Week multiple times this season.
It was another excellent start on the road, this time at Edgewood College, which earned him NAC Pitcher of the Week honors. Nicholson started game one of the doubleheader and had opposing hitters flustered all game. The senior tossed his NAC leading fifth complete game and third complete game shutout this season. During his nine innings of work, Nicholson scattered 9 hits and walked just one batter while striking out seven. Nicholson has now thrown 18 consecutive scoreless innings for the Regents.
Nicholson has been very effective on the mound for Rockford this season, but he has been extremely dominant during Northern Athletics Conference play. Nicholson currently leads the Northern Athletics Conference in complete games (5), complete game shutouts (3), and strikeouts (50). He also leads the Regents pitching staff in innings pitched (58.0), batting average against (.254) and is tied for the team-high in wins (5). However it is during NAC play where Nicholson has really shined on the mound this season. In his five conference starts, Nicholson is 4-1 with four complete games and three shutouts. The righty has a stingy 1.41 ERA striking out 37 batters in just 38.1 innings pitched with opponent hitters batting just .212 against him.
In addition to his stellar performance on the mound, Nicholson has also been a key component in the middle of the Regents lineup. Holding down the fifth spot in the batting order, Nicholson is hitting .385 with 47 hits, 11 doubles, 1 triple and team-high 3 home runs. Nicholson has knocked in 30 runs while scoring 27 runs with a .442 on-base percentage and a .566 slugging percentage.
Rockford is currently in first place in the Northern Athletics Conference with a 22-14 overall record and a 17-3 NAC record. The Regents continues to play their best baseball of the season at the right time having won nine consecutive games and are winners of seventeen of their last nineteen. The baseball team will return home on Thursday for senior night at 6:00 p.m. against Beloit College after a game at the University of Chicago at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The team will wrap-up its regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m. at Benedictine University. Rockford needs to win one game to assure itself of a share of the NAC regular season title and can clinch the title outright with a sweep.
