ROCKFORD, Ill. – Early Monday evening senior shortstop Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) was recognized for his outstanding performance last week. Dercks was honored by the Northern Athletics Conference and was named NAC Position Player of the Week for the first time in his four year career. Although this is the first time Dercks has won a weekly award from the NAC the senior has had a stellar career and has received multiple postseason honors from the Conference. In his freshman year Dercks was named to the All-Freshman Team and was the Northern Athletics Conference’s Freshman of the Year. His junior year Dercks earned First Team All-NAC honors and is on pace to have an even better year this season.
It was his performance last week that got him recognized by the NAC, leading the Regents to a 6-1 week and helping move the team into first place in the Northern Athletics Conference. The Kaukauna native hit an astounding .586 with a .966 slugging percentage. He pounded out 17 hits during the week including 8 doubles and 1 home run to go along with his 13 runs batted in out of the leadoff spot. In the very first game of the week, Dercks tied the school record against Marian when he had 3 doubles in a single game. Additionally, in that game Dercks collected one of his two four-hit games on top of the pair of three-hit games he recorded in the week as well. The four-year starter at shortstop also has a strong possibility of breaking multiple career records before the end of the season.
This season could be one of best seasons of his career. Dercks has really responded well hitting in the leadoff spot during his final season in a Regents uniform. The senior currently ranks in the top six in the NAC in multiple categories. He has turned into the ideal leadoff hitter ranking second in conference with a .492 on-base percentage. He is third in the NAC with a .416 batting average which is easily the highest of his career. Dercks is fourth in hits with 42 and tied for fourth in triples with 2. The senior is fifth with 30 runs scored and currently sits sixth with 11 doubles. In addition to leading Rockford in all the aforementioned categories, Dercks also currently leads the team in almost every other major statistical category including: at bats (101), total bases (60), slugging percentage (.594), assists (77) and is tied for the team lead with 14 walks.
The Regents are currently 13-13 on the season and are 9-3 in Northern Athletics Conference play. The team’s 9-3 NAC record puts them in first place in the conference with 10 games remaining. Rockford has gone 13-4 since returning from its spring trip including two wins over teams ranked in the top 25. The Regents will look to keep the momentum going when they host North Park University in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, April 17th at 6:00 p.m. at RiverHawks Stadium. Rockford will return to NAC play on Friday, April 20th when they travel to Watertown, Wis. for a doubleheader against Maranatha Baptist Bible College. First pitch on Friday is set for 3:00 p.m.
