RIVER FOREST, Ill. – It has been a difficult stretch for the Rockford College softball team as they have entered the most difficult part of their schedule playing some of the top teams in the Northern Athletics Conference. On Saturday Rockford traveled to River Forest, Ill. looking to improve upon its 44-18 all-time record against the Concordia University Chicago Cougars.
The opening game of the doubleheader got off a fast start for the Regents. Leadoff batter Alyssa Novak (Utica, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) reached base on a throwing error after laying down a nice bunt on the first pitch of the game. Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) would come through for the Regents with a clutch 2-out RBI double to give Rockford an early lead. Center fielder Alexis Ford (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) gave Rockford a 2-0 lead two batters later when the junior drove an RBI single into left field. The Regents would maintain their two run lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Cougars would score two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2. The game would not remain tied for long as Concordia Chicago would score a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead into the final inning. Rockford would get the tying run on base with 2-outs but was unable to score a run and would lose the opener 3-2.
Pitcher Jennifer Zulkanycz (Norco, Calif./Norco) threw an excellent game for the Regents. The junior threw her second complete game in eight starts this season. Zulkanycz scattered 7 hits and allowed just 3 earned runs in her strong effort on the mound.
The second game of the doubleheader appeared as though it was going to be anther pitchers’ duel. Neither team was able to get anything going in the first three and half innings as the game entered the bottom of the fourth still scoreless. Concordia Chicago would bust the game open scoring four runs on five hits making it a 4-0 Cougar lead. The Regents would come out swinging in the top of the fifth and chip away at the lead. Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) would get the first of three straight Rockford singles in the inning with a base hit to center field. Alexis Ford and Alyssa Novak would each follow suit with singles of their own to load the bases. Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) would work the count and draw an RBI walk to make it a 4-1 game. However, that would be as close as Rockford would get as Concordia Chicago would score a run in the bottom of the fifth and win game two by a score of 5-1.
The softball team will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 17th at home against Concordia University Wisconsin. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
