BELOIT, Wis. – The baseball team traveled up to Beloit, Wis. on Wednesday night to face off with the Beloit College Buccaneers in a mid-week non-conference matchup at Pohlman Field.  The Regents entered the game having won 4 in a row and 9 of their last 12; The Regents are 31-17 against Beloit but have struggled lately against the Buccaneers losing 3 straight in the series.

It was a combination or timely hitting and solid pitching that would allow Rockford to build up an early lead.  The Regents would strike first as hot-hitting shortstop Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) would lead off the game with a single up the middle.  Dercks would score later in the inning on a Beloit throwing error giving the Regents a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.  Kaleb Rich (Washington, Iowa/Washington) started the game for the Regents on the mound giving the team 2 strong innings of work surrendering no runs on just one Beloit hit.  Rockford would provide three more runs of support for its pitching staff in the top of the fourth inning.  Seniors Curt Daughenbaugh (Dakota, Ill./Dakota) and Jimmy Dercks would get the big inning started with singles into the outfield.  After a bunt would advance the runners, senior Kevin Miller (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) would clear the bases with a 2-run triple to the wall in right center field.  Miller would score the final run of the inning on a Daryn Streed (Belvidere, Ill./North) sacrifice fly.  The Regents would tack on yet another run in the fourth inning.  Rockford would get its lead off hitter on base for the 3rd time in 4 innings this time courtesy of a walk by Jake Gorsuch (Cherry Valley, Ill./Jefferson).  Daughenbaugh would advance him to third on a single and he would later score on a Dercks sacrifice fly increasing the Rockford lead to 5-0.  After the Buccaneers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Regents would add two critical insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Kevin Miller recorded his third hit of the afternoon with an RBI double and Streed hit in the other run on an RBI single.  Rockford would need every one of the seven runs it scored as the Buccaneers would mount a late rally scoring one in the eighth and three more in ninth with only one out and bases loaded.  The Regents would turn to closer Sean Gillette (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) who after giving up the fourth run of the inning on a single to make it a 7-6 game, would bear down to stop the Beloit surge.  Gillete would strike next batter looking and get the final batter of the game to fly out to center field to pick up his second straight save. The 7-6 win marks the team’s 5th consecutive victory and moves Rockford to 10-12 this year.

Sophomore pitcher Corey Seipts (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) was brilliant on the mound during his 5 innings of relief work to pick up his first win of the season.  Seipts gave up just one hit and one run while striking out 5 batters.  The sophomore never allowed the Buccaneers to get anything going offensively as he retired 6 of the first 8 batters and the final 7 Beloit hitters he faced.

It was three seniors who stole the show offensively on Wednesday under the lights.  Dercks continued his torrid hitting going 3-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.  Kevin Miller was just a home run short of the cycle as was also 3-4 while scoring one run and driving in three.  Daughenbaugh was a perfect 4-4 on the evening with 2 runs scored.

The baseball team heads to Aurora on Saturday, April 14th for a doubleheader against the Spartans.  The two teams will battle for first place with the opening pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
