Jake Nicholson Earns NAC Pitcher of the Week Honors

ROCKFORD, Ill. – For the second consecutive day senior pitcher Jake Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) was honored for his pitching performance last week. After previously being named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, late yesterday afternoon Nicholson was named Northern Athletics Conference Pitcher of the Week. This is the second time in two years that Nicholson has received Pitcher of the Week honors from the Northern Athletics Conference, with the previous award coming for his performance during the week of March 7-13 in the 2011 season.
It was Nicholson’s 1-hit performance on the mound last Saturday that got him recognized as NAC Pitcher of the Week. The senior was almost untouchable as he was just one out away from throwing a no-hitter when surrendered his only hit of the game on a hard hit ball into center field. Nicholson would retire the next batter to finish his one-hit complete game shutout. In the game, the right-hander would strikeout a season-high 9 batters while walking just 3.
Nicholson has contributed to the team this season both on the mound as well as at the plate. He leads the team with a 3-1 record, 3 complete games, a 4.04 ERA, 35.2 innings pitched and 29 strikeouts. However, in his last 3 starts on the hill he has simply been masterful. In those starts Nicholson is 3-0 with 3 complete games, a 0.78 ERA and 20 strikeouts. At the plate this season, the Stillman Valley native boasts a .366 batting average with 28 hits, 6 doubles, a .535 slugging percentage and a .442 on-base percentage. Nicholson leads the team with 2 home runs, 22 RBI and is tied with a team-best 11 walks.
Rockford is currently 9-12 this season and is in second place in the Northern Athletics Conference with a 6-2 NAC record. The Regents are 9-3 over their last twelve games and look to keep the momentum going when the play on the road against Beloit College at 6:00 p.m. on April, 11th before resuming NAC play with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at first place Aurora University.
