LOVES PARK, Ill. – Entering Monday night the Regents baseball team has been on a roll as of late, going 7-3 in its last 10 games and starting out conference play in second place with a 4-2 record.  Rockford looked to continue their winning ways as they hosted the Marian University Sabres who was also entered the game with a 4-2 Northern Athletics Conference record.  Before the game, the Regents held a 13-6 record against the Sabres going 9-3 against them in conference play.

Junior pitcher Daryn Streed (Belvidere, Ill./North) got the ball to start game one and delivered yet another quality start for the Regents.  Streed went 7.1 strong innings for Rockford giving up 3 runs with only 2 of the runs being earned.  The junior struck out 3 Marian hitters in route to his third win in his last 3 appearances.  Sean Gillette (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) pitched the final 1.2 innings and picked up the first save of his collegiate career.

The Rockford offense would not be outdone as they scored 9 runs in game one in support of the pitching staff.  Senior Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) led off the game with a double down the right field line.  Kipton Bucey (Byron, Ill./Stillman Valley) would advance Dercks to third on single to center field and advance to second on the throw to the plate putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.  Two batters later Streed would drive in the first run of the game on an RBI groundout.  Jake Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) would make it a 2-0 lead when he doubled to center field to score Bucey.  After Marian scored a run in the top of the 4th Rockford would answer right back with a run of its own in the bottom of the 4th.  Ryan Lesner (Algonquin, Ill./Harry D. Jacobs) would get the inning off to a good start when singled into center field.  After a couple of quick outs and a hit batsman, Jimmy Dercks would make it a 3-1 lead with his second double of the game.  Rockford would put the game away two innings later scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.  After a Marian error to lead off the inning, Ryne Billesbach (Belvidere, Ill./North) would single putting runners on 1st and 2nd.  Following a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly, Dercks would again come up with the big hit hammering a 2-run home run over the right field wall.  The Regents would add 3 more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Rockford would load the bases on the third double of the game by Dercks followed by a Bucey single and hit batsman.  Nicholson would then clear the bases with a double of his own to deep left center field.  Marian would score 2 runs in the top of the ninth but it would not be enough as the Regents would win the game 9-5.

Game two would be much of the same for the Rockford hitters as they would score 14 runs on 17 hits in route to the series sweep.  The Regents would jump on Marian’s starting pitcher early in the game scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Following a Sabre error and a fielder’s choice, senior Kevin Miller (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) would get the first hit of the second game when he drove a single into left field.  After a walk that would load the bases, Streed would record an RBI on a groundout and Lesner would single in two more runs to tie the game at 3-3.  Billesbach would break the tie with an RBI double to right center field.  The Regents would continue to pour on the runs scoring in every inning of the game except the second.  It was again the sixth inning where Rockford would put the game away scoring 3 runs give them a 10-4 lead.  Dercks would lead off the inning with his fourth double of the day.  Bucey would then follow suite with a double of his own to score Dercks.  Streed would hit in Bucey two batters later to score the second run of the inning.  After a balk moved Streed to second, Lesner would single in Streed for the final run of the inning.  The Regents would score one run in the eighth and three more in the ninth to cruise to a 14-6 win.

Junior pitcher Justin Moore (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) got the start in game two and picked up his first win of the season.  After getting off to a slow start, Moore really settled in nicely and gave the Regents six solid innings of work on the mound.  The junior struck out six batters while walking just three.  Zac Wolf (LaSalle, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) came in and pitched the final three innings to pick up his first save in a Regent uniform.  Wolf gave up just 2 unearned runs over his three innings of work.

It was a stellar offensive day for numerous hitters on Monday.  Jimmy Dercks lead the pack going 7-9 with 4 doubles, a home run, 5 RBI and 4 runs scored.  In game one Dercks tied the school record with 3 doubles in a game.  The senior now leads the Regents with a .398 batting average, 21 runs scored, 32 hits, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 46 total bases, a .568 slugging percentage, 11 walks, and a .490 on-base percentage.  Kipton Bucey was 5-10 with 4 runs scored, 2 RBI, and 2 doubles.  Bucey shares the team lead scoring 21 runs with Dercks.  Ryan Lesner also had an excellent day at the plate going 4-8 with 4 RBI, 4 runs scored and a walk.  Ryne Billesbach rounded out a solid performance for the Rockford offense also going 4-8 with a double, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.  The two wins move Rockford to 6-2 in the NAC and only one game behind first place Aurora University.

The baseball team’s next game will be on Wednesday, April, 11th against Beloit College.  The game will be played at Pohlman Stadium in Beloit Wis. with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
