ROCKFORD, Ill. – The men’s tennis team opened up Northern Athletics Conference play this past week looking to get off to a good start. While the week did not turn out how the team hoped, there were still some very successful individual performances on the court.
Sophomore Mladen Ubiparipovic (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) has been outstanding so far this year for the Regents. Ubiparipovic has taken on the tough task of playing in the #1 spot for the team and playing against each opponent’s best player. The sophomore went 2-1 in singles matches during the opening week of Northern Athletics Conference play. On Thursday he defeated Aurora University’s #1 singles player Ricky Hernandez 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 to hand the Spartan his only singles conference loss so far this season. Ubiparipovic followed that impressive win with a thrilling 3-set win over #1 Cody Strebig from Edgewood College 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 on Saturday morning. The sophomore’s only singles loss of the week came later that day against Jory Lawson from Marian University losing 7-5, 6-0.
Junior Nate Sweet (Flint, Mich./Grand Blanc) was the other Regent to pick up a singles victory for the Rockford last week. Sweet earned his first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon against Marian University in the #4 spot winning 6-3, 6-2.
The men’s tennis will return to the court on Saturday, April, 14th at 10:00 a.m. when they travel to MSOE. The team will play again later that day at 2:00 p.m. at Wisconsin Lutheran College
