ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Regents took to the field on Sunday afternoon looking to knock off rival Concordia Chicago for the first time since the 2010 season. The Cougars entered the day with a 13-4 record and ranked 19th in the country. After a slow start to the season, the Regents have really turned it around recently and were up to task on Sunday.
Game one was a low scoring pitchers dual where the team that made the fewest mistakes was going to leave with the victory. Junior pitcher Daryn Streed (Belvidere, Ill./North) was sensational on the mound for Rockford. Streed held the Cougars scoreless through the first 4 innings while allowing just 1 hit. The Rockford offense would provide him with some run support in the bottom of the fourth scoring 3 runs to break a 0-0 tie. Kevin Miller (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) would get things going as he led off the inning with a single into right field. Streed would follow up Miller’s single with a single of his own to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no one out. Two batters later Ryne Billesbach (Belvidere, Ill./North) would single through the right side of the infield loading the bases with one out. Rockford would take the lead when Ryan Lesner (Algonquin, Ill./Harry D. Jacobs) ripped a 2-run double past the first baseman scoring Miller and Streed. After a fielder’s choice and an error the Regents would add one more run on an RBI walk. The Cougars would answer right back in the top of the fifth scoring 2 runs and threatening for more with runners on second and third and only one out. Streed would buckle down striking out the next batter and get the following batter to groundout to hold onto the 3-2 lead. Rockford would get one of the two runs back in the bottom of the 5th. Again it was Kevin Miller who got the Regents started with a lead off single to right center field. Streed again followed suite with single to right field placing runners once again on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk loaded the bases, catcher Terry Wiltshire (Elizabeth, Ill./River Ridge) would hit a high chopper to third base for an RBI single giving Rockford a 4-2 lead. Streed would take care of the rest working in and out of trouble and stranding 6 Cougar base runners over the final 4 innings to preserve the 4-2 win.
Game two had a very similar feel of pitchers dual where runs would be difficult to come by. Rockford would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double play ball with the bases loaded. The Regents would manufacture a run in the bottom of the second to make it a 2-0 lead. With runners on first and third with two outs Matt Grimes (O’Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West ) got in and stayed in a rundown just long enough for Ryan Lesner to score before being tagged out to end the inning. Sophomore pitcher Kaleb Rich (Washington, Iowa/Washington) followed up Streed’s excellent outing with solid outing of his own. Rich held the Cougars scoreless for the first three innings but gave up a run in the fourth inning making it just a 2-1 lead. The offense would get that run back in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out in the inning, Ryne Billesbach smoked a triple of the wall in left field. Billesbach would score two batters later on a throwing error to make it 3-1 lead. It would remain a two run lead for the Regents as Rich continued to shut down the Cougar offense threw the first 7 innings of the game. The top of the eighth inning would be a different story as the Cougars would take advantage of a few Rockford miscues and score 6 runs to take a 7-3 lead. The Regents were unable to answer over the final two innings and lost game two by a final of 7-3. The loss dropped Rockford to 2-2 in conference play.
The starting pitching was the main story in both games. Coming of his previous appearance where he allowed just 2 hits over 6.2 innings to pick up his first win of the year, Streed picked up right where he left off. Streed threw his first complete game of the year allowing just two runs to the highest scoring team in the Northern Athletics Conference. The junior struck out 6 Cougars and was able to get out of jams with strikeouts at key moments in the game. Kaleb Rich gave Rockford 7 strong innings of work in game two but was unable to overcome some mishaps in the field and get through the eighth inning. The Rockford offense was able to capitalize on some timely hitting to score runs in the doubleheader. Senior Kevin Miller was 5-8 against Concordia Chicago scoring 2 of the 7 Regent runs. His performance at the plate raised his average to .345 this season. Senior Ryan Lesner went 2-5 in the doubleheader and had the big 2-run double in game one. The senior was directly involved in 4 of the 7 Rockford runs as he had 2 runs batted in and scored 2 runs. Daryn Streed was strong at the plate in game one going 3-4 and scoring a run.
The baseball team will be off until Saturday, April 7th when they travel to Mequon, Wis. to play Concordia University Wisconsin. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
