ROCKFORD, Ill. – The softball team returned to the diamond on Friday to play its first home games of the season looking to pick up two more victories before hitting the road on Saturday. It would be a breakout day for the Regents bats coupled with steady pitching that would lead Rockford College to a sweep over the Mount Mary College Blue Angels.
The opener featured both excellent pitching as well as a huge fourth inning to catapult Rockford to victory. Freshman pitcher Sarah Moritz (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) was the star of game one for the Regents. Moritz had the Blue Angels hitters off-balance all game allowing only one unearned run in the fifth inning. The Regents got on the scoreboard in the first inning with an RBI groundout by Jessica Segalla (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem). Rockford College center fielder Alyssa Novak (Utica, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) would manufacture the second run of the game for the Regents. Novak would lead off the third inning with a walk, steal second base, advance to third on a groundout, and score on a wild pitch. The score would remain 2-0 until the Rockford offense exploded for 9 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Regents would send 14 batters to plate collecting 5 hits, 5 walks and taking advantage of a Mount Mary error. Paige Newhuis (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) had the big hit of the inning lining a 2-run double into left center field with 2-outs to keep the inning going. Mount Mary would score an unearned run in the top of the 5th inning but it would not be enough as Rockford would win the game 11-1.
After a very dominating performance in game one, the Regents would find themselves behind early in game two of the doubleheader. Rockford would give up 2 runs in both the top of the first and second innings to fall behind 4-1 heading into the bottom half of the second inning. After an error and a walk, Alyssa Novak would drive a RBI single into left field to cut into Mount Mary’s lead. One batter later, Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) would clear the bases with a 2-run triple to left field to and tie the game at 4-4. The next inning, the ladies would take their first lead of the game. Pitcher Eryn Dougherty (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette) would get things started with a double to left field. She would score one batter later when shortstop Alexis Ford (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) would rope an RBI single into center field. Rockford would score its final two runs of the inning on an RBI groundout and a wild pitch to take a 7-4 lead. The Regents would put the game away an inning later scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Marah Erbe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) hit a 2-run triple to left field to get the scoring started. Erbe would later score on a Bridget Kennedy (Sugar Grove, Ill./Aurora Christian) single to center field. The final two runs of inning would come courtesy of a 2-run double by Jossilyn Jones. Neither team would score for the remainder of the game leading to a 12-5 win for the Regents. Rockford has now won 3 of its last four games to improve its record to 6-10.
Pitching was key to the Regents sweep on Friday. Freshman pitcher Sarah Moritz picked up her second win this year and probably threw her best game of the season as well. Moritz needed just 50 pitches to throw her team leading 5th complete game of the season. The freshman gave up only 1 unearned run on just 4 hits and walked 0 batters. Mortiz lowered her team best ERA to 4.30 this year. After a difficult start in game two, senior Eryn Dougherty settled down and closed out the game strong. Dougherty held the Blue Angels scoreless over the final 3 innings of play and gave up only 1 run over the final 5 innings of the game. The senior recorded her 3rd complete game of the year to improve her record to 3-2. The Regents offense scored 23 runs on Friday with 14 of the runs coming in the fourth innings. Alyssa Novak continued her hot hitting over the past week going 3-5 with 2 walks and 2 RBI. The senior scored an amazing 6 runs during the two games giving her a team-high 12 runs scored this year. Jossilyn Jones went 4-5 with 5 RBI in the doubleheader. Jones continued to show her power at the plate hitting her 7th double and the team’s first triple of the season. Alexis Ford came through at the plate with 3 hits, an RBI and scored 4 runs on Friday. Paige Newhuis was also impressive with the bat. Newhuis ripped her first double this season going 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.
