MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Rockford College Softball team began the Northern Athletics Conference portion of its schedule Wednesday afternoon with a trip up to Milwaukee for a doubleheader against the Raiders of MSOE. Entering the games Rockford held a 22-2-1 record against the Raiders with an 8-2 record against them in Northern Athletics Conference play.
The ladies jumped all over the Raiders in game one scoring 10 runs in the first three inning of play. Pitcher Eryn Dougherty (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette) got the Regents started in the second inning when she led off the inning with double to left field. After a single by Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) advanced her to third base, Dougherty would score on a two out infield single by center fielder Alyssa Novak (Utica, Ill./LaSalle-Peru). Rockford would score two more runs in the inning one batter later off an infield error by the Raiders giving the Regents a 3-0 lead. The Regents would keep the pressure on in the third inning scoring 7 runs to make it a 10-0 lead. Freshman Jessica Segalla (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) started the inning with a single to center field. She would score one batter later on Jennifer Zulkanycz (Norco, Calif./Norco) double. After two walks loaded the bases for the Regents, senior Bridget Kennedy (Sugar Grove, Ill./Aurora Christian) hit a 2-run single to break the game open. Rockford would then take advantage of 3 MSOE errors and add 4 more runs later in the inning. After MSOE scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Regents would add 2 more runs in the top of the fifth and sail to a 12-4 victory over the Raiders.
After having a total of 16 runs scored in the first game, game two turned into a low scoring affair. Rockford was again able to get on the scoreboard first against the Raiders. After a line out to start the game, junior transfer Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) ripped a double down the left field line to give Rockford its first base runner of the game. She would score two batters later on a Jennifer Zulkanycz single to center field putting Rockford up 1-0. The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when MSOE scored 5 runs to capture its first lead of the day. The Regents would answer in the top of the fifth scoring 1 run to cut the Raiders lead to 5-2. Jossilyn Jones hit another 1-out double to left field and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder. Jones would score one batter later on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Segalla. However, neither team would score for the remainder of the game with MSOE winning game two by a score of 5-2. This marks the second consecutive year the two teams have split the season series.
