CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Regents softball team got back on track early Thursday morning with a 9-3 win over the Newbury College Nighthawks.  It was once again a slow start for Rockford as Newbury was able to plate 3 runs early to go up 3-0 on the Regents.  After an RBI double by Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) cut the Nighthawks lead to down to just 2 runs after 3 innings, Rockford used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead.  The Regents was able to capitalize on two Newbury errors to score the first two runs of the inning and tie the game.  Afterwards, Jossilyn Jones and Bridget Kennedy (Sugar Grove, Ill./Aurora Christian) took further advantage of the extra outs with RBI singles to push the Regents lead out to 5-3.  Rockford would salt the game away an inning later with three two-out RBIs courtesy of an RBI single by Jessica Segalla (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) and a two-run single by Bridget Kennedy.  The ladies would tack on an additional run in bottom of the sixth inning in route to the victory.  The Regents showed clutch two-out hitting at the plate scoring seven of their nine runs with two outs. With the victory the softball team improved to 3-4 on the season.

The top and bottom parts of the order really came through for the Regents on Thursday.   Leadoff hitter Jossilyn Jones was a perfect 3-3 with a walk and 2 RBIs.  Jones continues to compile impressive stats early in the season.  She currently leads the team with 10 hits, a .542 slugging percentage, 5 walks, a .517 on-base percentage, 5 runs scored and 3 doubles.  Senior Bridget Kennedy went 3-4 on the day with a season-high 3 RBIs.  The senior currently leads the team with 3 stolen bases and a blistering .444 batting average.  The bottom two batters in the order Jessica Segalla and Alyssa Novak (Utica, Ill./LaSalle Peru) each did an excellent job producing for the top of the order.  Segalla had an RBI and scored twice in the game while Novak was 1-1 with a walk and scored 3 times for the Regents.

Junior transfer Jennifer Zulkanycz (Norco, Calif./Norco) picked up her first win on the mound in a Regents uniform on Thursday morning.  The junior threw 6 innings allowing just 3 runs, only 2 of which were earned, while striking out 4 and walking only 1.  Zulkanycz was able to avoid what could have been a disastrous 2nd inning when the defense committed 3 errors behind her.  After the errors, she buckled down and record back-to-back ground outs to end the threat and strand 2 runners on base.  Zulkanycz surrendered just one more run during the remainder of her outing to earn the victory.

The softball team lost the second game of day against undefeated 10-0 Bridgewater State University dropping the Regents to 3-5 on the year.

Rockford will return to the diamond on Friday March 8th for their final two games in Florida.  The Regents will face RIT at 9 a.m. and Northland College at 1 p.m. local time.
